Why does age play a role in skin related changes?

With age, skin may also bruise more easily, due to loss of support around blood vessel walls that happens with age. isn’t as smooth or tight as it once was. It may also be drier, more fragile, and thinner than it used to be.

At about what age does it become noticeable for skin aging?

As early as age 30 you can notice signs of your skin aging.

What contributes to skin aging?

Normal aging, exposure to the sun and pollution, personal habits such as smoking and diet.

What effect does aging have on the accessory organs of the skin?

Aging weakens them making the hair fall more, dryness of sebaceous and sweat glands occur.

What happens to the epidermis as the skin ages?

Epidermis dries up due to aging due to the lower activity of sebaceous and sweat glands.

Does the number of cell layers in the epidermis remain the same as skin ages?

The outer skin layer (epidermis) thins, even though the number of cell layers remains unchanged.

Explain what happens to the melanocytes as skin ages.

The Melanocytes (Pigment containing cells) decrease in number but increase in size which gives a pale look to the skin.

What happens to the blood vessels of the dermis?

The blood vessels of the dermis become more fragile. This leads to bruising, bleeding under the skin (often called senile purpura), cherry angiomas, and similar conditions.

What is elastosis?

Elastosis refers to degenerative changes in the dermal tissue with increased deposition of elastin material.

What are the sebaceous glands?

Sebaceous glands are microscopic exocrine glands in the skin that secrete an oily or waxy matter, called sebum, to lubricate and waterproof the skin and hair. They are usually attached to hair follicles and release a fatty substance, sebum, into the follicular duct and thence to the surface of the skin.

What do they produce?

Sebaceous glands produce sebum a kind of oily substance which keeps the skin moist and supple.

What affect do they play on aging?

Sebaceous glands produce less oil during aging.

Explain the differences between the effects of sebaceous gland changes on a man and a woman.

Sebum production is double that of women in men, so male skin is oilier and shinier than female skin. Also, their sebaceous glands and their pores are larger than those of women.

As you age, are you at more of a risk for heat stroke? Why or why not?

Your ability to cope with extreme heat depends on the strength of your central nervous system. In the very young, the central nervous system is not fully developed, and in adults over 65, the central nervous system begins to deteriorate, which makes your body less able to cope with changes in body temperature. Both age groups usually have difficulty remaining hydrated, which also increases risk.

What happens to the subcutaneous fat layer as one ages? What effect does that have on how medications work?

The subcutaneous fat layer thins so it has less insulation and padding. This increases your risk of skin injury and reduces your ability to maintain body temperature.

What are some cosmetic anti-aging treatments to diminish skin aging effects?

Deeper facial lines may be treated with botulinum toxin or fillers, including hyaluronic acid injections.

As you age, do you think you would have cosmetic surgery to “reverse” the aging process?

No I would not have cosmetic surgery to reverse the aging process because it is only a tempory fix and sooner or later you will have to deal with the aging process.
