This paper will also discuss the dissimilarities with both local law enforcement and state law enforcement in junction with additional requirements that maybe needed at a state level. Paper will also evaluate which position possess a more challenging job and which the writer would prefer. In addition, writer will suggest one (1) new requirement that can be added to but not currently used in both local law enforcement agency and state law enforcement agency.

Describe the requirements for a recruit based on your state police as well as your local law enforcement agency:

In the state of Maryland, according how to become a police officer in Maryland (2019), is to pass the following requirements based on the County. Each city of that particular county holds different requirements because of the severity of crime rates and differ based on the demographics. The majority of the requirements that are similar is to have a valid driver’s license and, in some county, will require only a Maryland’s driver’s license, must be a United States citizen, have a high school diploma or a GED and must be 21 years of age. In addition to the recruitment, he or she must have no record of felony or any serious misdemeanor convictions, no use of Marijuana more than five (5) times since the age of 21 or more than twenty (20) times in your lifetime. No use of controlled substance, or narcotic more than once since the age of 21 or more than five (5) times in your lifetime. No use prior use of heroin or LSD, or even PCP in your history. Will need to take a written exam, physical exam, medical, psychological tests, and background check.

A state trooper’s recruitment requirement in the state of Maryland are a bit different than the local law enforcement police officer. In this process, a person who is interested in becoming one will self-evaluate themselves first. He or she must fall under the following category to be considered such as, be between the ages of 19 – 59 years old, have a valid driver’s license, be a United States citizen, posses a high school diploma or a GED, and finally, have a 20/20 vision whether is was corrected or not. He or she will be ineligible if they have any prior record of felony, more than three (3) points on his or her driving record, any conviction or even a court order for domestic violence, and any use of controlled substance within the last three (3) years. Once these requirements are established, they can continue with the recruitment process which includes written exam, oral exam, medical and psychological test, physical exam, background check, and polygraph exam. In addition, state trooper training for emergency vehicle operation, sobriety testing, firearms operation, and defensive tactics (Maryland State Trooper Training., 2019).

Contrast the recruitment requirements between your state police and local law enforcement agency and rationalize the additional requirements at the state level.

The differences between state police and local law enforcement agency is that local police can stay within the city limits and state trooper has authority spread wide across the state lines. The primary job for the state trooper is patrolling the highway and across the state while local police are only confined to, the city they are in. The uniforms are different between state and local as well as vehicle color.

Evaluate the positions to determine which is a more challenging career and which you would prefer. Explain your decisions.

The most challenging career between the state law enforcement and local law enforcement would be the local law enforcement agency. The local enforcement has to deal with more issues such as various types of crimes, and traffic versus state trooper only deals with state lines. I would prefer a more challenging career because as a local law enforcement officer, it allows me to expand and explore many cases within the local city.

Give one (1) suggestion of a new requirement that is not currently included in the recruitment requirements for both your state police and local law enforcement agency.

One of the new requirements that is not currently included in the recruitment plan is that only in some local cities in the state of Maryland requires some college education. The new requirement should be that not only a few but all local areas should requirement that all new hires should have some college background history. This promotes not only the basic knowledge and street knowledge, but having a bit of educated background be a requirement. According to Wilson, Dalton, Scheer, & Grammich (2010), states that those who have a bit more knowledge than what the requirements previously was only benefits the agency. For example, the world has more terrorist attacks, cyber threats, street crimes, and much more to deal with.
