For this journal entry, I was asked to respond to the following two questions. How important are factors such as age, education, race, ethnicity, social class, gender, and religion in my choice of someone for a serious relationship? To what extent was I conscious of such influences when I picked someone to date?

These questions were defiantly difficult for me to answer because I have been married to my wife for eleven years and coupled with her for fourteen years. I had to look at these questions as a what if type scenario. When I look at the factors listed I would have to say that age is an important factor for a relationship, I would not want to be with someone that had a wide age gap because I think the generational difference would cause too many issues. I don’t think education would be a big issue for me. I also don’t think race, ethnicity, religion or social class would be a major factor as long as I consider them to be a good person, that’s what makes the difference to me. Gender would make a difference to me as I am a heterosexual man. I’m pro same sex coupling but I am not attracted to men.

For the second question I honestly don’t think I was actually conscious of many of these when I was younger. With the exception of gender, I didn’t really have a standard of who I dated, things of that nature weren’t important to me and honestly still aren’t. I don’t think any of these factors minus the gender factor for me anyway should influence the way I perceive interact with or hold a relationship with.
