Reflective Journal 3: My Views on the Future of Music, Newspapers and Books

SOC 105 – Society and the Media

Predict one or two changes people will make in their reading and listening habits if the conventional reproduction of music, news, and books were to become obsolete.

If the conventional reproduction of music, news and books were to become obsolete, two changes people will have to make in their reading and listening habits would be to budget and learn to be more technical. I selected budget because people will retain internet services for their personal use along with Wi-Fi services and must keep their electronic devices operating and functioning. In addition, the “free” radio may not be free going forward, especially if you want to select your specific preference, therefore people may have to pay for radio. To enjoy music and read books etc. citizens will have to get used to buying digital books such as e-books, and music they can download or stream and going to the internet for their news sources. Society will have to have internet and webservices available in their homes and/or on their phones. Also, People will need to ensure that they have computers, laptops, smartphones, MP3 or MP4 players, tablets, smart- TVs, Bluetooth/wireless functionality and other electronic devices with special capabilities to hear and view to listen and read materials. The present-day innovative conventions all have additional cost. You pay for internet, pay more for speed if you need to use on multiple devices via Wi-Fi, need to pay to have security on your devices to prevent cyber-attacks etc. Cable have additional costs and another cost for some streaming services or membership services to have access to music and books.

Also noted another habit people will have to implement in their reading and listening habits were to be more technical. Being comfortable using electronic devices is necessary especially because music will not be on vinyl and books or news on paper; therefore, society will have to get used to being electronic savvy and technically skilled. When these purchases are made, they must remember that their actual content or libraries will exist in the cloud and should be downloaded onto their devices and lists made for storage and organization. Maintenance on these devices will take skill as well. If unable to do so themselves, they may need to schedule for someone to teach them and assist with managing, clearing space in devices etc.

. Today’s society is digital, and technology is steady developing and moving forward. I do not believe that within the next five years there will be a major shift from where we are now, however, the devices currently used to read books, listen to music, download, stream, and obtain the news will continue to be improved with faster speeds and more capabilities and functions.
