The Impact of Technology on High School Students

Appling, T. (2015). The Effect of 1:1 Technology on Student Achievement. University of Central Missouri, Department of Educational Leadership and Human Development.

The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of 1:1 technology initiatives on the academic achievement of students. The research problem in this study describes the need to fill in the gaps in research on the effect of incorporation of technology in student instruction and delivery of classroom content. The problem statement of this research is that with the technological advancements in the world, schools have to spend millions of dollars on programs aimed at incorporating technology in learning and developing these skills among students, in an attempt to raise student achievement. There is need to carry out research therefore to determine the importance of such programs and whether they are worthwhile.

This study highlights the fact that despite the introduction of technology and its incorporation in education at various levels, there has not been adequate exploration of its impact. The gaps in literature that studied the problem in this research indicate that there has been an increase in the 1:1 technology in schools within the past decade, but few large-scale research studies done on the impact of these programs on teaching and learning. Various studies done may not fill the gap in research in the investigation of the impact of a specific program that aims to incorporate technology in education. This study majorly focuses on the impact of 1:1 technology on student achievement and therefore attempts to fill this gap.

The research questions in this study include the following: How has public education evolved because of technology? What strategies are teachers using to improve student motivation and learning that were not available before the integration of 1:1 technology? How is the role of the teacher changing because of technology? The conceptual framework of this study is referred to as technology implementation, which entails a set of measures that reflect the level of progress in the competency of teaching with technology. The findings of the research indicate that despite there being some negative aspects of technology, education, using 1:1 technologies increases the motivation, and learning of students, increases options to get their education, and changes the way teachers deliver instruction. The aspect of this article relevant to this research topic is that it examines the effect of technology on student achievement and the positive and negative impacts of technology on student learning.
