Crisis is a difficult situation that needs an immediate resolution. Every individual experiences a crisis moment at one point in his/her life. Most often crisis results to unexpected loss or even a threat. There are a number of theories that are believed to be of helpful in the event of a crisis in one s life. One of the effective theory is ABC Model of crisis intervention.ABC model of crisis intervention is a theory by Gerald Caplan and Eric Lindemann. The main purpose of this theory is to conduct a brief health with persons whose might be experiencing crisis. The model basically focuses on the problem that the client might be experiencing. This model of crisis intervention uses three stages to approach any problem. This stages are A Developing and maintain a rapport. In this stage the counselor uses basic attending skills, parapharasing and reflection of feeling. B In this stage the counselor identifies the nature of the crisis and altering cognitions including identifying aspects of the crisis state, medical issues, support and validation. The third stage is C coping include resolution referral and support groups.

The ABC model of crisis intervention approach begins with the first stage whereby the councilor has to develop and maintain a rapport with the client. This stage is very important to the councilor since it it helps to gather information as possible. So for every to be smooth it is important to create a strong rapport with the client. It is important to note that the counsilor should always avoid sound like he is interrogating the client.Inoder to make the session successfully, the councilor should have basic attending skills. The attending skills are both verbal and non verbal. This skills are good eye contact, body language, vocal style and verbal following always ,makes the client want to open more to the councilor.

Another basic skill that the councilor should posses is the ability to paraphrase.According to Kristi Kanel pharaphrasing is when the the counselor restastes their own words. The main reason for paraphrasing is to encourage elaboration of statements inorder to let the client know that you heard and understood him or her.

Also another basic skill is reflection and of emotions. This skills are best done immediately following a display of non verbal feelings by the client. They can also be done whenever a client expresses feelings verbally. In this case a counsilor should keep it short ans brief inorder to allow the client stay with feeling and be able to talk about what he or she is feeling deep inside.

Ability to question is another basic skill that the counsilor posses.A good counsilor with abilty to question makes the client be able to explore more of what they have shared. The interviewer should be able to ask an appropriate question at the right time. There are types of questions that can asked to the client. This type of includes Open ended questions, these types of questions gives the client a room to express themselves. Another type of question is close ended question, these questions help the interviewer gather factual information such as age or marital status.

After creating a good rapport with the client the counselor now gets to the second stage of ABC model where he has to identify the problem .This is the most crucial stage because the counselor focuses on identifying the clients current problem that precipated the crisis. As said a counselor is interested in knowing what the in clients life led to his or her crisis, and what led to seek for help at that given time.In this stage the best approach is to wait until initial tension is removed from the clients frustration with the crisis.Problem identification will be very important for the treatment planning.Because the clients problem maybe coming from the very same answers of the question being asked. Sample questions could be what do you believe is the primary problem?what would you like to work on today? And so forth.

The can use a more systematic approach which is identifying the precipating events. The counsilor may ask what happened before that led to the crisis? What happened that you are defining as a crisis? Is what happened causing you to think or act differently that you thought before?Eplore the meaning of events. What do the crisis events mean to you?Do you believe that this crisis is unique to your life?Explore the affective distress. What emotions are you experiencing now?How are current emotions different from what you would normally experience? Are in despair? Are you contemplating suicide?Identify other effects. How has the crisis affected your behavior? Are you using drugs and alcohol more than before the crisis?

After identifying the problem there are therapeutic techniques that would apply in the crisis counseling this include listening,Effective counseling is more about listening than speaking in the beginning. As a process unfolds the therapeutic commnunication will become more dialogue than monologue.Assesment is another technique which is can be carried out in asking the questions during identifying the problem..Reframing,this is the cognitive technique of assisting the client in developing a new perspective on the event.Planning .This the final phase to assist the client in developing a course of action in response to the crisis.

Coping is the final stage of ABC model,of crisis intervention .This stage incorporates the coping skills and support mechanism for the client. The planning phase includes he coping skills that are recognized in the assessment.Additional coping skills and support networks will likely be needed.Referrals to community resources like support groups could be useful and very important to the client. The counselor can also

To conclude we all experience a crisis at some point in life.Crisis counseling can be helpful tool in mitigating the anxiety that comes with these unexpected and unwanted events. The ABC model offers an effective approach to helping you become whole again.
