Introduction
There are several threats to the global environment. These include the ones that have been previously discussed in the past discussions. In this segment, we focus on the ones that are deemed less threatening that the previous four that were discussed earlier. This is because, in my opinion, the ones that shall be discussed in this session most often pose a lesser risk than the ones that had been discussed earlier. From the previous discussion, the four major threats in my opinion from the order of severity included the following.
The first key threat was civil wars, poor health of entire populations, climate change and lack of educational opportunities. In my opinion, these were the main threats that pose the highest level of risks to the global environment. Among the other four that remain, the two that will be discussed in this session include cultural taboos and globalization. The aim of this discussion will be to elucidate why these two are lesser threats that the four previously alluded to.
Section 1:Threat 1
Cultural taboos are the restrictions set up by a certain community in relation to their regular norms. In most cases, these dictate how most things are done. They also prohibit other aspects that they deem not in tandem with their beliefs. This was not listed as a major threat because of the following reasons. First and foremost, most of the time, they do not affect the entire world population. These taboos only limit certain communities and therefore do not pose huge threats as compared to the others that have previously discussed. Their effects are only felt severely when members of these communities decide to emigrate while running from the taboos causing overpopulation in the nearing areas, which then pose many challenges to the global environment.
Next, not all members of a given community often follow cultural taboos, for this reason, especially in places where people are much educated. These are mainly outdated. This means that very few individuals still practice these derogatory practices, which may then pose global challenges later. Over the past years, due to a decline in these practices, there has been a steady decline in the effects of the taboos on the environment. It therefore is not as huge a threat as it was before.
The third reason as to why cultural taboos do not pose a huge threat is that it is not a worldwide concern. Very limited communities in the entire world still strictly respect cultural priorities and take part in activities to uphold these taboos. Therefore, there are very limited pockets in the world that cause this trickling effect. In contrast with issues such as civil wars, which affect several parts of the world most often at the same time, these do not occur in several parts of the world and therefore do not pose a huge risk in my opinion.
Section II: Threat 2
The next threat for discussion is the negative effect of globalization. Globalization is defined as the process in which countries and people in different parts of the world get to interact and become integrated. This helps in creating a global village and has really helped in improving the world and the activities that take place worldwide. In as much as a lot has improved due to globalization, several disadvantages have come about due to the same.
Primarily, it has increased the rates of terrorism in the world. This is currently a huge concern all over; a negative effect that blew out of proportion with the incoming of globalization. The adverse effects of terrorism include raging fires, destruction of property and deaths, which are all detrimental to the environment. However, instances such as these occur rarely and not as continuously as the other major threats discussed in the previous assignment. For example, poor health of all populations is a constant threat mainly because it is an occurrence that continues on a daily basis. There are statistics on the number of deaths that occur daily because of poor health. On the other hand, acts of terrorism occur occasionally and therefore are not a constant active threat. This means that some of the adverse effects of globalization are not as constant and continuously progressive as the previously discussed ones. This does not dispute the fact that it is often a huge disaster. The fact is that it is a global threat but does not occur on a daily basis.
Next, it has generally been postulated that globalization has led to rapid development of global competition, which has subsequently led to depletion of environmental resources and emission of harmful products and gases to the environment. However, the same globalization has led to innovation of ways to reduce the toxic emissions and reduce them to less harmful products to the environment. One could even argue that deglobalization would lead to worse effects that globalization already has. This is because; there would be minimal inventions on how to reduce the effects of pollution. There would be poor communication and poor education; both which would favor ignorance and a great lack of knowledge which would otherwise lead to greater damage.
The third reason is mainly because, in as much as globalization poses some aspect of a global threat, there are several other advantages that came about following its inception and it therefore creates a delicate balance. The advantages are several including the ability to pool resources together as a community, improvement of communication and worldwide access, faster development of the world among several other advantages. None of the four threats discussed earlier has a single positive effect appended to them and for this reason, I did not find it particularly compelling for globalization to be among the four major threats.
Conclusion
In conclusion, there are several threats to the global environment. However, not all exist with the same intensity. Others have several adverse effects as compared to the others. For this reason, even their solutions have to be prioritized based on the severity of the effects they bring about. In the remaining list of four less severe threats, their order of preference would be in the following manner; inappropriate use of technology, energy sources, cultural taboos and finally globalization. The first ones to receive higher priority as compared to the latter.
