What was the main issue of this week’s topic?

The main issue of this week’s topic was about the role played by the Human Resource in an organization for the purpose of implementing and developing the procedures and policies for both the employees, managers and the organization as a whole. It is within this topic that we examined the effects of regulatory, safety, and legal requirements on the Human Resource process. It is also in this week’s topic that we learned about the challenges faced by human resource managers when it comes to selection, recruitment, training and conducting planning programs, testing and listening to their complains as well as the concerns they try to raise as well as their ability to communicate with their specific manager. This week’s main issue is about the employees’ absenteeism and turnover. I am in a career where I have been seeing workers join and leave the organization although I have never known how much it cost the organization.

How were your choices received by the supervisor in the simulation?

I received a mixture of reactions from my supervisor in the stimulation. In the stimulations, my choices were often correct and appealing and therefore my supervisor agreed with everything and was so receptive about my ideas. However, during the time for negotiations with the union, I would face a very hard time because not everything I suggested could be fully accepted. The supervisor would then go ahead and explain why such was not a good decision. I could not agree with all the explanations but I came to learn and appreciate resource managers because human resource is one special job which is very stressful. This gave me an opportunity to understand that the supervisor’s choices were the best in making the whole company’s operations successful.

What was the main lesson you learned from this exercise?

I learned very critical lessons from this exercise. I learned that employee needs as well as the needs of the company should be balanced. If human resource can learn on how to balance between these two things of maintaining the relations of the employees and ensuring the survival of a company, then they can sustain those two aspects. It is the obligation of Human Resource to ensure that the company’s profit and success are well maintained as well as ensuring that all the needs and rights of the employees are respected and followed.

I also learned that an organization should do several things in order to reduce employee turnover and absenteeism. First of all, it should hire the right people who have the right skills and who meet the requirements of the organization. There are some problems that come along when the organization employs people who do not fit in the work environment. If employees do not fit in the work environment, they always feel lonely and will not get along with the other co-workers and therefore won’t stay around. The issue of absenteeism will start being manifested.

Secondly, the organization should offer a reasonable pay that match the employees work. If they are not paid well, they will definitely quit and seek employment in a better place where they are appreciated.

Thirdly, the organization should learn to give praise and recognition to the employees. When appreciated, the employees feel good and even work harder.

Therefore, the human resource is a department that foresees all these things and makes sure that they are all observed in order to increase the turnover of the employees and decrease the cases of absenteeism.
