What is your topic?

The topic that I have chosen for the final research paper is: Counseling Clients with Varying

Disabilities.

Why did you select this topic?

I selected this topic as it has significant meaning to my family. I grew up with a younger

brother, who has varying disabilities, and spent time in different therapies and counseling

appointments. Writing a research paper, on a topic that I have personally lived, has a deeper

meaning, as I will spend more time gathering intel to make a difference in the counseling

community. I have, even spent time counseling a child with Down Syndrome, so the topic has

even more deeper meaning to my intel on this topic.

How does this topic apply in multicultural counseling?

Disabilities affect many different cultures. Each culture has their own view on counseling and

disabilities. With multicultural counseling, the counselor must consider not only the cultural

beliefs of the client and their family, but the disability, as well. This topic has a great meaning of

importance, as without considering and taking the time to understand the different beliefs of the

client and the way the disability affects the client, the counselor will not meet the expectations of

the client and their family. Some cultures do not believe in professional counselors, while others

have such a negative view on professional counselors, that the counselor will need to utilize

different methods and techniques to better benefit their client and their families. Some counselors

may not be aware of these challenges, so a research paper that discusses this topic has a greater

meaning of importance than ever before. A counselor’s job is to better benefit their client, to

improve their mental wellbeing, and multicultural counseling can add challenges to the

counselor. Without the proper support, the counselor will become stuck, which is not needed, not

when resources are available to the counselor, they just must look deeper to assist their clients.
