Developing a Team

Introduction

Teams are essential in any organization; they are used to accomplish a common mission and goal within a specified period. Team is an assemblage of people having collective identity joined together, and therefore, it is important to be well informed and careful in selecting team members. Individual team members are selected in regards to their areas of specialty and skills such; product knowledge, leadership and reasoning abilities. Diverse skills and abilities promote adaptability, accuracy and timely completion of the tasks(Fapohunda, 2013). In assembling an effective team, it is important to take into consideration the following main elements and tools; adaptability, respect, communication, delegation, leadership and balanced skill set.

Creating a Diverse Team of Employees with Different Strengths

To effectively create a diverse team, it is important to understand the nature of the various diverse elements. Diversity can either be in the form of culture, skills, way of knowing/understanding, experiences, and race. Therefore, a diverse team is simply a team where team members are valued, respected and understood regardless of their culture, race, skills and experience with respect to valuing the differences and similarities in the team so as to achieve positive work and be productive. Therefore, in creating a diverse team it is crucial to put in consideration the following, in regards to the team; requirements, expectations, incentives and work-related pressure to effectively manage the diverse team and eventually be productive.

To assemble a diverse team, I will put more focus on individuals’ strengths, skills and qualities so as to motivate them and unlock their potential. To achieve this, I will implement the following strategies;

Look for diverse skills, experience, and strengths: it is important to know and understand individuals’ strengths and talents in a team so that we can effectively balance them to bring the best out of the team. For instance, it’s not practical to have a team that is only executional and result oriented and forgets to build a strong relationship with customers or even being creative and problem-solving with the current challenges.

Help and make them appreciate the value of their strengths as well as others strengths: this enables team members to appreciate the diverseness in skills and strengths and learn how to collaboratively optimize their strengths in achieving organizational goals.

Other strategies that I will use to build a diverse skilled, and with different strengths in terms of skills and experience are:

Methods to Adopt to Improve Team Dynamics and Employee Behavior

  • Allocating tasks and projects with respect to individuals’ strengths, skills and character
  • Fostering and encouraging informal social activities
  • Challenging them to use and exploit their strengths
  • Enabling inclusiveness

Team dynamics is defined as how members distinct behaviors and roles affect other team members and the whole team. Team dynamics is the psychological, unconscious factors that influence the team’s direction, behavior, and performance. Good team dynamics means that team members trust and value each other and are always cohesive, and therefore makes decision-making process simple and efficient, and effective and productive. Listed below are strategies to improve team dynamics

Management techniques to implement to aligns the team to the company’s mission

  • Conducting an analysis and getting to know my team
  • Addressing problems timely and efficiently
  • Creating and adopting a team chatter
  • Enhancing team culture
    • Building and encouraging room for effective communication
    • Paying attention at all times to the team

Great results and timely accomplishment of tasks is achieved if teams are aligned to the organization’s goals and missions. Employees feel they are an integral part of the organization and therefore, they tend to enjoy teamwork. In aligning the team, it is important to give them a clear picture of goals, missions and the future of the organization. The following management techniques will be implemented to effectively align the team to organizational goals.

Clear communication – it is essential to regularly communicate the organizations progress towards achieving the goals and recognizing the team’s efforts for meeting targets and achieving the goals.

Clear written goals and scheduled meetings – goals and missions should be clearly defined(Grusenmeyer, 2009) in writing, major steps and action plans should also be identified and communicated to the team, and scheduled meetings with the team to share with them the company’s goals and their roles in the achieving the said goals. It is also important to give the team ideas on how it can help the organization in achieving the goals and missions.
