The Quest for Transgender Equality- New York Times

Elements of reason are so much helpful when evaluating reasonably and objectively how logical an article is. I will be assessing not just whether they are being defensively used, but also the degree to which the article from New York Times utilizes them.

Purpose/goal is one of the basic elements of reason. From the topic, the authors of the article is clear on what they want to achieve-passing information on the struggle of the transgender community to become tolerated by the larger community. Throughout the article, this is clearly utilized because all the questions concerning the issue are all answered in the article.

When one reads the article, several questions that arise in the readers mind are inevitably answered. The problem at hand is being articulately dissolved, although no question is put through to be answered. The attempt to figure out what the transgender community in the U.S is going through is clearly addressed in the article, and at the end of the article the reader is left without any further questions.

It is impressive how well the author has researched about the whole topic, and gives statistics and past incidences to try and solve the problem. The facts and information e.g. from the Williams institute study used in the article is convincing to any reader, and legitimizes authenticity of the article.

The conceptual dimension is however not developed properly; being an article only intended to pass particular information. The structure of the article is in itself not meant to argue out a point; therefore there it was needles to come up with a concept, since a concept is used in reasoning a point out.

The article utilizes the presupposition that transgender people are treated unfairly, an assumption upon which the whole article is based upon. It is really important because it gives the article a starting point because, which has to be proven. In the article, we learn that the assumption is justifiable, and greatly shapes the point of view.

The effectiveness of the article is anchored upon a point of view that transgender people are doing so much to have them recognized as human beings. It is from here that the authors are standing from, and this necessitated them looking for facts to back up their claim. They also look at other points of view, e.g. the pentagon’s decision not to allow this group to join the military.

Form the article; we can make conclusions based on the reasoning the article utilizes. The reader is at the end convinced that in the near future, the transgender people will be treated fairly, since the trend has been improving overtime. This can be concluded without fear of contradicting the article.

Implications are always inevitable in any reasonably argued out article. This article is no exception, because it somehow seeks to shape peoples opinions and ideas concerning the issue. After reading the article, someone will choose to continue discriminating against transgenders, despite their quest for otherwise, or treat them fairly.

This conclusion has obviously given a slant to the topic. It is only directed towards how transgenders are agitating for their rights and why they should, but has nit touched on why they shouldn’t. It has however been used effectively, given the purpose and the question at hand.
