Ethics in Criminal Justice Administration Analysis
A lot of dilemmas happen in criminal justice system which requires ethics to be applied and excellent decisions to be made. Every scenario in criminal justice calls for understanding of the relationship between ethics and professional behaviors. Important decisions should be done in order to understand what should be done if one is presented with a case. The person making the decision must be able to comprehend a situation and make analysis which best suits the scenario. This paper will therefore discuss the relationship between ethics and professional behavior in the criminal justice system. It will also present how critical thinking is applied in criminal justice system. Additionally, the paper will also propose a seminar on the process and the steps to be following during professional standards and behaviors that should be inclusive in the criminal justice system (Guillemin, & Gillam, 2004).
Due Process
Emphases have been put under the crime control model whereby the model is out to reduce the rate of crimes in the society through increasing the security officers in the society. Crime control model is concerned on the individual liberty through protection of personal rights while reducing governmental powers. This model does not follow some of the line in the due process for security purposes. The model focuses most not only on the organizational management but also the management of the workers. The model puts emphasis on the employees that even when they off duty, they must take responsibilities more than those on duty. Law enforcement agent must undergo different checkups including physical abilities, background checks and drug screening before joining the organization. Ethical standards and professional skill are held high in criminal justice system. These skills are linked together with critical thinking skills for all those in the criminal justice system. Law enforcement agents are people who should change the lives of many for better lives. They should be the eyes of the society and act responsibly. Training of these officers will impact more knowledge, skills and other methods of dealing with lawbreakers (Baker & Maier, 2011).
Critical Thinking
Critical thinking plays a very important role in decision making of criminal justice system. The growth of the professional roles is highly determined by the level of critical thinking of an individual. Critical thinking skills enable an individual to make decisions professionally and in ethical manner. This also applies not only to the professionals but also in the law enforcement sector whereby it is through the use of critical thinking the law will be considered to be broken or not. Many situations in criminal justice system must use critical thinking skills in order to make the best decisions to the challenges presented. Critical thinking also enables the professional to be able to understand and be aware of the kind of response to give to the situations they face. In addition, critical thinking is also applicable during making judgmental decisions of whether to arrest the victim or to give time to the actions for investigative measures. If critical thinking is well applied in criminal justice systems good results occurs which goes hand in hand with ethical behaviors. If officers do not use critical thinking well, they tend to react according to their feelings of aggression which may put the victims under unnecessary severe conditions. The officers are the eyes of the court therefore the court tend to react positively on what the officers have presented to them. How to use critical thinking skills depends on the past encounters of an individual and how the person has been brought up (Guillemin, & Gillam, 2004).
Critical thinking is also applicable in courts whereby the court must first think critically before making the final decisions concerning the individual. There are a lot of information the court is presented with by the officers and other individual. In order to make clear and effective judgment by the court, it should use critical thinking skills before making conclusions. For the court to act ethically and in a professional way, critical thinking must be applied. Critical thinking skills are the best values each individual in criminal justice system should be equipped with because they are faced by many scenarios. The court also must apply critical thinking skills to ensure that the organizational development is overseen well without challenges. Critical thinking also helps in evaluation and implementation of the decisions made for the organizational progress. Various dangerous situations are encountered I day to day activities not only by the police officers but also the parole which require critical thinking to be applied (Baker & Maier, 2011).
The correction department relies much on critical thinking in order to help the victims with ideas and opinions helpful in life. All these activities require critical thinking and it goes hand in hand with professional behavior and ethics. Regardless of the feeling of the people concerned in the court and handling of situations, they must hold their beliefs and values in order to deal with different situations. All agents employed for human service must use critical thinking skill in law enforcement situations. Law enforcement also requires ethical order and professional behavior in order to deal with the different situations. Moral skills and critical thinking skills must be held at high position while handling some of the stressful situations faced by the criminal justice officers. Criminal justice system requires people who are well equipped with different values, skills and knowledge on how to handle different cases in day to day lives. Many cases need evaluation process to reach an effective conclusion and make fruitful judgment. Every situation in criminal justice system requires critical thinking skills, professional skills and ethical behaviors (Guillemin, & Gillam, 2004).
Law Enforcement Ethics
Law enforcement authorities face many challenges while handling criminal justice situations. These officers are confronted with different situations which require them to make wise judgments. Law enforcement training can therefore enable these officers be able to recognize these challenges, be able to address and find solutions by providing effective or wise option for the dilemma presented to them. Ethics training can help officers to be able to take actions responsibly without being manipulated by other people. In addition, creation of educational institutions and seminars will also enable the officers to be able to use critical thinking skills together with professional skills and ethics in their job opportunities. The training and seminars will help the law enforcement officers to be able to accept their responsibilities despite the outcomes. The seminar should address the importance of critical thinking, use of professional skills and ethical behavior in handling any case presented to them without difficulties. They will be able to deal with law breakers without being compromised due to the professional skills they have. Stressful situations require high application of critical thinking and professional skills to be able to remain calm and solve the situation. Law enforcement agents need to be equipped with critical thinking skills and how to best apply them when faced by dilemmas. The lessons will also impact positive minds to the law enforcement workers to be able to handle different cases in the organization (Baker & Maier, 2011).
The training is of great help to the agents because they will be able to understand their clients most and know the best way to help them. It is important for the agents to be trained on the consequences of tribalism, discrimination and gender bias so that they may be careful and fair while handling the lawbreakers. All the officers should act responsibly to their work and to the people they serve not considering they are on duty or not in duty. Human service workers should behave well even when they are not administering service to the community so as to be the role models to other people. The training should also put emphasis on the bribes and also gifts whereby they should not receive these kind of pay from the community members. They should serve the community honestly without expecting any pay from the society. By doing so, these officers will be respected in the community which would in turn build trust not only for the officers but also for the criminal justice system (Carr & Kemmis, 2003).
Conclusively, by the use of seminars and training institutions will benefit most not only the law enforcement agents but also the criminal justice system to create the best place to live for all citizens. The criminal justice officers would be equipped with knowledge and skills on how to critically think and solve a scenario. Law enforcement workers will be able use ethical standards while handling different challenges. Through training these officers, it would be easy for them to serve professionally the society and the people and be able to offer excellent services. From their service, the community would feel safe and be able to trust and respect them (Luthar, DiBattista, & Gautschi, 2007).
