Evolution and Philosophy of TQM

Go to The Quality Register Website and review Dr. Edwards Deming’s 14 Principles located athttp://www.qualityregister.co.uk/14principles.html. Next, select three (3) of Deming’s 14 points, and evaluate how each point is critical to the success of a TQM program. Provide specific examples to support your rationale.

The three points that I chose as being critical in the success of a TQM program are Cease dependence on mass inspection, Institute training on the job, and Institute leadership.

Cease dependence on mass inspection is critical because as Dr. Deming stated products should have built in quality in the first place. Businesses should be proactive and not reactive. They shouldn’t be looking for problems from the beginning, they should make sure the product is built with excellence from the start.

Institute training on the job is critical because employees need to be properly trained to insure that the job is being done right. Everyone needs to be trained. At my job, some people were poorly trained and it shows in their quality scores and honestly it comes from the trainers not being up to date with all of the quality changes. One trainer may tell you go left and the next will tell you to go right. All trainers, managers, and workers need to be on the same page to ensure that the job is done correctly.

Institute leadership is critical because great leadership is needed to stir the company in the right direction. I like to think of leadership in the sense of the trickle down effect. If you have good leadership at the top it will trickle down to the employees. If you have leadership doing things improperly, the employees will in turn do things improperly and think it is okay because they saw someone in leadership act in that manner.
