Motivation
The philosophical approach that I believe captain strong should take in carrying out this project is the Douglas McGregor’s theory X and Y that explains how managers can establish self- fulfilling outcomes based on the employee treatment from the Captain.
The motivation strategies that I would recommend to captain strong are as follows; Trust which deals with the proper communication between the employer and employee so as to ensure productive relationship. Reward system is strategy number two. This acts as an incentive to the police officers as an appreciation to the work they carry out. Recognition is strategy number three which motivates them to keep doing the required in a different way in the achieving of the organizational goals. Career advancement is strategy number four it introduces the opportunities for the advancement of the positions availed to the employees. Lastly happiness is essential for all the employees to be able to carry out their mandates. Happiness is always linked to job satisfaction.
ERG theory was developed as one of the laws that would then be necessary in the examination of the factors necessary in the motivation of employees it was developed to expound on the Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. Maslow’s theory consists of six needs. They include physiological, safety, love, esteem and self-actualization. In the proper analysis of the above one may then state that ERG has three classes of the human needs that may affect the employees conduct. They are as follows growth and development, the actuality and connection.
ERG combines the physiological and safety needs as the first facet of the theory which includes things like basic needs e.g. thirst hunger among others. The second facet is the combination of the social and external esteem. Several books collectively call then the relatedness facet. It looks at the relationships developed by the employees with the families and friends and colleagues at work. The third facet looks at individual growth and development. It considers the self-actualization and the internal esteem where creativity and productivity is displayed. Based on the above we are able to identify that the managers have an actual duty to identify their employees several need and ensure that they are satisfied in the times necessary and in alternate. Erg theory states that in the event that there is focus on one particular need for all employees then there would be no effective motivation.
The EGR theory provides a principle called the frustration – regression principle which states that in the event an employer fails to recognize and address the higher need that is wanting to the employees then the person may regress towards the lower level needs which then would appear easy to gratify. For example in the event that growth and development need is not properly addressed then they would want to socialize more now that there is no direct focus of attention paid. The managers then in the realization ought to address the matter to satisfy the frustration.
Having considered the above explanation to EGR I would confidently state that it is applicable to the extent of the employee needs are concerned. The examples as to why there is applicability of erg is that there is the existence of the regulation that diminishes the social facet that looks into the social and external esteem that is key to the relationships existing in the work place by stating that prohibits the officers more than two officers eating meals or taking coffee breaks at the same time in the same restaurant. The second example is that because of the too much work load and development then the first facet that includes eating and sex as essential need.
Job enlargement in the basic definition means an expansion that leads to the addition of responsibility that has been entrusted upon the employer at a particular level of authority. It is one of the approaches used in job designs in any organization whereas job enrichment the employers put in the motivation factors that would increase the motivation among the employees. It actually places a wide range of things to be done by individuals and add more encounters and makes the work place interesting to be and open room for activities.
Based on the circumstance faced by Captain Edith Strong it will be recommendable have her implement the Job enrichment. This is because it would improve efficiency of the employees in a work place and increase diversity of the tasks. It encourages growth and creativities. It ensures proper planning in the organizations and proper decision making. Using job enrichment then Captain Strong would be able to explore and find the proper motivations.
