The conclusion of the Cold War seemed to decrease the security problems of the world’s major powers. However, radical Islam created new, unexpected threats, including the 9/11 attacks. This demonstrated that all countries must always be on guard for the unexpected.

·        Select any two of the four basic strategies used to preserve security. Identify and describe what assumptions are made about the opponent according to each of the two strategies you chose.

Explanation;

1.      Defense. The idea here is to have a strong defense so that it will not be worthwhile to attack you. You are trying to ensure that you can withstand any attack. The assumption taken is that the countries defense is stronger than that of the opponents 

2.      Disarmament- this ensure that all countries reduce their weapon up to set limit. It assumes that all countries will reduce their weapons

 

·        Give an example of each of the two (2) strategies in current world politics and speculate on their effectiveness.

Example

Defense-  The idea here is to have a strong defense so that it will not be worthwhile to attack you. You are trying to ensure that you can withstand any attack. This strategy is very important in terms of preventing any kind future of threat for all countries to always be ready.

 Disarmament policy- This was tried after WWI in the Washington Naval Conference agreements that limited the size of various navies. This was also the idea behind the SALT talks between the Soviet Union and the United States. This has not been so effective as many countries tend to neglect the policy.
