Nurse’s priority is promoting better health care and health for all patients. They have a voice and have an expert perspective in promoting better healthcare in hospitals both public and private. The American Nurses Association basically influence the decisions and policies in matters that affect the nurses as well as the patients. Basing my study on Michigan state, this paper seeks to find out about how the bill of paid sick leave becomes a law (Mason et al 2013).

For instance, in small hospitals where the employees or nurses are less than ten, they get an allowance of an hour’s paid sick leave in every thirty hours that they have been working and, in a year, it adds up to forty hours of paid sick leave and thirty-two hours of unpaid sick leave. However, if the hospital has more than ten employees or nurses then the paid sick leave is seventy-two hours annually. The cover ranges from the employee to the adjacent family members to domestic violence or sexual assault of the employee or family member, meetings that are related to child’s school or even closures for emergencies that may be related to public health.

Introduction of the Bill to the Senate

The law bill number is SB212. This bill has affected an approximate of two million employees who lack the paid sick leave allowance and thus will benefit them once the law is passed. The exemption for this law will be employees of the federal government. In hospitals where the employees are less than ten then for every one hour which used to be the paid sick leave for every thirty hours could augment to forty hours as well as an addition of thirty-two unpaid hours. For the hospitals with ten or more employees, the one hour paid sick leave for every thirty hours could augment and add up to seventy-two hours worked.

Senate members confer and reach a compromise

The accrual is expected to commence on the day of employment. Therefore, the employees can use the sick leave as it is but for the employees who will be hired after the first of April are expected to wait for at least ninety days after they are employed. Coverage for the public health emergency will also range from individuals that are related by blood that is be it grandparents or sibling or grandchild or an individual whom the person can refer to as family although they are not related by blood (DeNisco & Barker, 2013).

The cover will also extend to employee or close family member who could have been a victim of domestic or sexual assault. Also close of business place, care center or closure of school of child as well attendance of child’s school related meeting, event or event important function. It however does not apply to the existing CBA’s till they expire. This law will be applicable in existing employers’ policies in that for the institutions with less than ten employees, will be in a position to access the earned paid sick leave before the unpaid and for those with more employees will get the same amount of paid sick leave as per the law and will be utilized under the same conditions.

The Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs will be the enforcement agencies and thus the employees may file a claim with the department then the department will be in conduct the investigations. The employees are entitled to civil action where they could be demanding relief from unused time, reestablishment of employee benefits, rehiring, reinstatement, repayment of back wages and an equal addition amount as liquidated damages along with costs and reasonable attorney fees. The law is expected to be effective as of April 2019.
