Subject: Parkinson ’s disease and its Effects

Parkinson’s disease is a slowly developing disease that affects the nervous system. The body nervous system consists of nerves and special cells that are responsible for transmitting signals within the body. The disease impairs physical movement and the affected individual, as time progresses, will not be able to move the different parts of the body. They may also lose body balance. In its early stages, the affected individual may experience tremors in one hand, stiffness and slowed movement. Speech is also known to slow down.

A person suffering from Parkinson’s disease is likely to develop mental problems. Depression is known to be common among the affected individuals. Depression is a condition that arises due to chemical imbalance in the brain. It is also called mood disorder. With people suffering from Parkinson’s disease, depression develops long before any other symptoms and may make other Parkinson’s disease worse. Depression is noticed when one does not find pleasure in things they use to enjoy, inability to sleep or too much sleep, lack of concentration, thoughts of death, low self-esteem and changes in energy levels.

Tertiary care should be given Parkinson’s patients by qualified nurses in nursing homes. Depressed patients should be encouraged to accept and love themselves. While interacting with them, simple and familiar phrases should be used, clarity emphasized and should be given enough time to respond. They should also get humble time to eat. The patients should receive their medication on time.

In order to know more about the disease, the patient can research from the Internet and also check on research from health facilities on the disease. The patient can also be referred to a experienced specialized who has dealt with cases of the same disease over a long time.

Patients suffering from Parkinson’s disease may face discrimination from the society. Different individuals perceive health conditions differently. Failure to understand the scientific causes of a disease may result in some patients not receiving the necessary care. Some families even hide their sick relatives in fear of perception from others. Ignorance lowers the levels of development in the society.
