Prison Reentry Discussion

Assessment is the first step and a very critical part of the reentry process. Utilizing a strength-based approach while conducting assessment is key to the successful assessment of a client’s needs. A strength-based approach involves remaining positive and identifying talents, skills, and interests. What do you think are some strategies in a strength-based approach that a counselor can utilize with a client? Explain how these strategies can be successful.

When it comes to working with a client in supporting them in their reentry process, a likely approach that a counselor may take is would most likely a motivational interviewing approach, as well as a cognitive behavioral approach, that goes into a more strength-based direction to help create an effective relationship with the client. The foundation and relationship are a crucial component to build, so that the client can trust the approach and process the counselor has in mind when it comes to supporting them. This way, the client too, will be goal-oriented and skill-driven, to enhance their strengths, and ambition to utilize all resources they are given to their best potential. When it comes to uncovering barriers, I believe it is important for a client to identify their goals, and recognize what ambitions they have, as well as acknowledge their ability to perform.

The client must be aware of their skills in order to utilize those when it comes to overcoming barriers or challenges. If a client does not recognize what those are, it is important for a counselor to help point them out or teach them how to utilize them in specific moments. A client must be prepared for what reentry looks like, and how having a background of being incarcerated could create a barrier for them when reentering (Simon, 2014). It is important to support a client with proper resources and services that they can utilize, when going through the reentry process. This includes both resources and services around their daily living, such as housing, employment, food, etc., while also providing them with resources and services that they can engage in to maintain their mental health and emotional support, such as continuous counseling, treatment, or connection to natural supports.
