Social Science Issues

Sometimes it is helpful to get an outside perspective. In your discussion post, describe your selected social science issue and include two relevant questions that social science professionals (e.g., psychologists, sociologists, or anthropologists) might be interested in.

In response to your peers, add a relevant question or summary that will support them in narrowing the investigative focus for their topic/issue.

Hello class!

The issue in the social sciences that I have selected to investigate is in regard to the social factors that contribute to and/or perpetuate addiction. This issue is significant because drugs and addiction have been a problem in our society for years. Now, more than ever, people are losing their lives to substances like opiates and fentanyl. This topic hits home with me because my childhood best friend became addicted to a certain substance, and unfortunately, last May she ended up overdosing.

Below are two relevant questions that social science professionals might be interested in.

Psychologists

What environmental stressors influence drug use?

Are brain abnormalities the culprit of addiction?

Sociologists

How do the roles of attitude and behavior have on groups who become addicted?

What circumstances have led groups to become addicted to drugs?

Anthropologists

Do certain geographic locations have more of a problem with addiction?

How have drugs and addictions changed cultural views?

Based on the broad search, refine the list of keywords that you created on the previous page. List here any keywords or keyword combinations that returned results that are relevant to your social science issue. Then, note which keywords or combinations you will no longer use, as they returned off-topic or overly broad results.

Refined keywords that returned relevant results:

1. Social factors AND Contribute to addiction AND drugs
2. Circumstances and stressors of addiction
3. Drug addiction AND Geographic location AND Effects
4. Addiction AND Brain abnormalities OR Mental illness
