Introduction
Developing transferable skills is essential in the contemporary economy. Due to the changing market demands, it is worthwhile for an individual to learn and develop skills needed in one place, as well as skills that can be used in another situation. Even in the job market, it is required that an employee should be in a position to perform several tasks at work, rather than been over-specialized, incapacitating one for performing a task outside the normal routine.
In line with the concept of transferable skills, learners are encouraged to develop some generic skills or soft skills, such that they are able to do more in the economy. There are challenges in the economy that are associated with professionals who are over-specialized, and possess no transferable skill. This is characterized by effective adaptability to technological changes, dealing with the diversity of the tasks arising in the economy as well as searching and sustaining the links with the community.In addition, an advanced learner engagement is critical in the 21st century, so as to enhance a conversion process between the theoretical academic perceptions towards the skills learned in class to the real life situations.
According to Quinton & Smallbone (2010) ability of an individual to reflect as well as analyze written materials, forms the basis for critical thinking and advanced learning process. Logical judgment by an individual is only possible if an individual has critical analysis to events in real life situations.Lerner’s engagement in deep rather than surface learning is the major contributor to the effective development of transferable skills in life. In this regard, an individual will be in a stance to critically analyze situations and apply a skill that was used in a different environment to competently resolve the issue at hand.
Bailey, Minderhout & Loertscher (2012) delves that, transferable skills, from a classroom setting, can be developed through teamwork, process skills, communication as well as problem-solving. The argument is that, in the process of nurturing the actual skills, the learners are in a position to learn the transferable skills. These are developed during the interactive learning sessions, in which the teacher is in a position to react to the student’s queries, erasing the misconceptions among the learners in various subjects. The problem-solving models instill analytic mind which is critical to the development of the transferable skills. Broad and open understanding of the concepts presented in the classroom set up, basically forms the basis upon which transferable skills are grasped.
Conclusion
Transferable skills are essential in the contemporary economy. The economy faces a number of challenges if the workforce does not have transferable skills, which renders the economy ineffective in some areas where such workforces are dominant. Transferableskills can be learned in a classroom setting, during interactive learners-teacher sessions. In order for the workforce to remain relevant in the contemporary economy, one needs to be sensitive to technological change. Finally, competent personnel possess the knowledge, skills, attitude, and values as well as desires to deliver professional services.
