Virtuous and Vicious Acts in Law Enforcement
Belinda Luscombe (2014) mentions that although the police department carries out mandatory arrests even in instances involving misdemeanor cases, it has been found that such actions actually impact negatively on the long term health of the victims. This argument is especially illustrated by the high number of deaths reported among those who had witnessed the arrest of their partners, as compared to those who were only warned against the wrongdoings. As such, there has been growing concern about the need to reduce arrests while considering the use of other punitive alternatives.
It is prudent that the police consider two important aspects of the acts, for instance, the intensity of the violence and the substance abuse situation of the individual, to decide whether the action warrants an arrest or not. In determining the intensity, the police can discern whether the violence caused significant physical harm to the victim, in addition to how frequent the perpetrator shows the behavior. On the other hand, the police can investigate whether the offender is an addict and whether they are likely to act under the influence of drugs.
The present criminal justice system has been inadequate in establishing proper solutions to the many reported cases of domestic violence. Thus, there is a need for social service organizations to be charged with such responsibilities. For example, locking a father for beating up his wife only creates a gap and imbalance within the family. It would be much better if the couples were counseled and educated on how to solve their relationship issues in a peaceful manner.
