Website Review And Summary

Article Review

The mission of community health is to protect the public against exposure to illnesses known to be contagious or transmissible from environmental sources. Community health identifies risks to the population & applies procedures & treatments necessary to ensure environmental issues, respiratory issues, & diseases are kept from worsening. Global warming in the environment, asthma, & diabetes have contributed to health concerns in communities creating a need for community health. Community health is dedicated to the health of the people & to finding resolution to community health issues through education & prevention.

Global Warming

According to the Natural Resources Defense Council (2005) “Carbon dioxide & other air pollution that is collecting in the atmosphere like a thickening blanket, trapping the sun’s heat & causing the planet to warm up” (p. 1). Global warming causes extreme weather conditions resulting in death & destruction. Higher temperatures cause more polluted days resulting in higher incidents of illness & death as a result of flooding & tornadoes. Flooding results in a polluted water supply making diseases more prevalent like cholera & malaria. Global warming has been damaging the environment for approximately 28 years.

Community health has shown concern for the health effects of global warming by designating tree planning days. Community health has begun educating the public ways to decrease the effects of global warming by recycling, using less energy, using public transportation, & driving less, walking, or riding bicycles. “Global warming leads to higher concentrations of pollution from cars & other sources on hot days. Smog can damage lung tissue, increasing respiratory & heart disease & death & even in modest increases of smog can cause asthma in children” (Kay, 2007, p. 1)

Asthma

Air pollution can make it harder to breathe resulting in an increase in lung infections. Air pollution can cause damage to the lining of the lungs & at times it can be permanent leading to a lower quality of life (US Environmental Protection Agency, 2010). People die each year from complications from exposue to chemicals in air pollution. Extended periods of exposure to higher air pollution levels can cause diseases, such as, bronchitis, cancer, heart disease, & trigger asthma attacks. It is though that asthma has been around for thousands of years but had become an epidemic for approximately 28 years with the rise in air pollution. Asthma has affected the community in positive way so that asthma suffers can live a healthier life. Community health has implemented education for patients & health care professional. Surveys have gone out so that interventions will target indviduals at a greater risk. Asthma interventions must address risk factors, which include cigarette smoke exposure, obesity, & indoor air quality (Payne, 2010).

Diabetes

Diabetes is a disease where the body does not produce enough insulin or use it properly. Only two types of diabetes i defined in the health care field, & they are classified as Type 1 & Type 2. With Type 1 diabetes, insulin is not produced in the body. With Type 2, the body makes insulin but not enough. The ost important thing for a person diagnosed with diabetes is to obtain as much information as possible. Education is required for the diabetic to understand the disease & to learn what changes need to be made in their lives to remain as healthy as possible.

Diabetes symptoms were first recogized in the 15th century but were mistakenly diagnosed as a kidney disorder. Diabetes affects the community because the lack of education & the ability to afford diabetes medications resulting n a higher mortality rate. Community health implemented diabetes education classes ecause many diabetics in the community had never received diabetes education. The classestaught participants how diabetes affects the body & how self-management controls the disease. It is important that individuals in the community with diabetes receive regular help & support n community support groups. Community health main goal is to educate the community the neessary steps to prevent diabetes through healthy eating habits & regular exercise (Ingram, Galleos & Elenes, 2005).

onclusion

Community health focus is on prevention & disease management. Environmental factors, respiratory issues & diseases including diabetes can affect the quality of life of those individuals affected. Many symptoms & diseases in the community can be prevented or managed through education & support. Air pollution, asthma, & diabetes have no cure but can be managed so that the symptoms are not as severe for individuals afflicted. Community health is essential to improve the health of everyone in the community.
