SNMP is an initial standing for simple network management protocol which is an internet standard procedure collecting and analysing data concerning managed devices. The managed information found on IP networks is therefore modified to change the behaviour of the device. The SNMP is broadly used for network monitoring in every network management. It work through sending messages which are as well called protocol data units to a device speaking SNMP within your network (Miller, 2010). The network administrators can easy track the value of data using the requests send by SNMP. The sole purpose of SNMP is to manage and monitor network whereby these protocols are supported by variety of typical devices like bridges, routers, servers, printers, workstations, modem racks and many other network devices.
The main difference between SNMPv1, SNMPv2 and SNMPv3 are as follows: SNMPv1 was the first version to be used for SNMP, SNMPv2 is still existing in four forms today (SNMPv2c, SNMPv2p,,SNMPv2u & SNMPv2*), and SNMPv3 is the newest version being used for network management (Ranjbar, 2014). In terms of security, SNMPv1 portrayed no security when an individual is accessing the network, SNMPv2 had a failure on security improvement while SNMPv3 has an evidence primary feature of security which is enhanced for quality network management. When looking on the complexity of the three devices, SNMPv1 has got performance and security limits, SNMPv2 is more powerful but more complex than the SNMPv2 and SNMPv3 is more focused on improving the security aspect in network management protocol.
In conclusion, SNMPv1, SNMPv2 and SNMPv3 have got variety of differences not limited to the above listed points. All these SNMP are focused on network management and control. The three protocols also send messages in different numbers.
