Unit II Journal Reflection
For this journal entry, I am being asked to reflect on the information available in the Emergency Response Guidebook or through the app and on the format in which it is presented. Which resource (hard copy or mobile app) would be a more effective tool for you in the workplace and why?
After reviewing the information available on the emergency response guidebook (ERG) from our course book, I have found that the ERG is a guide to be used during the response to an emergency response situation that involves hazardous materials in either the loading, unloading or transport operations. It is organized into color coded sections that list UN/NA identification numbers and the chemicals associated with those numbers, a summary of information on the potential hazardous material, and the initial isolation procedures and protective action distances for small or big spills, (Meyer, 2014). Due to both the hard copy and the mobile app both requiring payment to view, I was unable to get a firsthand glimpse at them. I did however see examples of both, I viewed the hard copy example from the course textbook and reviewed the mobile app images and reviews from the mobile app store. If I had to determine which version would be best utilized for myself, I would have to go with the used of the mobile app due to the digital age that I live in and that I am accustomed to utilizing. I would also recommend the use of the. Hard copy version to be available for communication outage situations. I and everyone I work with use mobile phones on a daily basis and are familiar with using digital applications such as the mobile ERG app but there are times when hardcopy references are needed. In the military we have to remain flexible and current with the times but true to tradition. I do think the digital version would be the most effective for myself and my peers but also realize that the hard copies are just as useful.
