For most people first impressions are everything, and considering you never get a second chance at a first impression it is no wonder there is a certain level of anxiety when meeting someone for the first time. As humans we naturally try and lower this anxiety through multiple methods. Think about your best friend or significant other, and reflect on how your relationship has progressed from strangers to where you are now. Now think about the first time you two met, and how little both of you knew about each other. People whether they know it or not engage in certain behaviors during a first interaction in order to reduce any anxiety they are feeling. These behaviors can be described and analyzed. In this essay, I will describe how interpersonal and intrapersonal theories can be applied to one’s personal life.
