My dream job is to become a human resource manager with the Government through Lockheed Martin in Huntsville Alabama. I have a passion for being in charge of others, and I believe I have good skills in business and marketing. I believe that with this combination I can bring any company success.
A career as a Human Resource Manager with the Lockheed Martin means you will typically need a bachelor’s degree to land the position. Although a concentration in human resources may be valuable to some employers, other fields like finance, business management, education or information technology, are usually acceptable. Courses in conflict management, industrial psychology and organizational development will be helpful for the role. For higher-level positions, a master’s degree in human resources is key. Beyond a college education, employers may favor candidates with a human resources certification. This is something to consider after work experience in the field to continue your education and further your professional development. The professional in human resources (PHR), senior professional in human resources (SPHR) and global professional in human resources (GPHR) certifications will make you more marketable. There are multiple professional associations that offer certification programs, including the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) and the HR Certification Institute (HRCI) in business administration (MBA) may be required.
Lockheed Martins human resource managers are the overseers of the human resources department and insurers of the functions and tasks being carried out by the HR team. They are often seen as the link between an organization’s management and its employees, as their work runs the gamut from providing consultation on strategic planning with top executives to recruiting, interviewing, and hiring new staff.

HR Manager Salaries at Lockheed Martin can range from $113,257 – $128,452.
The vacation time for employees less than 4 years almost double that which I currently receive working for Jefferson County Commission with the city of Birmingham. This for me is a plus.
Compensatory time is time earned in place of overtime earned, if agreed to by the employer or required by regulation. A supervisor must approve in advance. Compensatory time off will be granted within a reasonable amount of time after the compensatory time is performed. The time limit for the use of compensatory time is the end of the leave year in which the time was earned, unless the failure to use it is due to important work, which had to be performed. My dad is a retiree from Lockheed Martin, so when I started to do my research I asked him about compensatory time, because I can remember when he decided to retire he had well over 11 month of built up time “his words” that would allow him to not have to work, but still be paid and it wasn’t his vacation time. Now this is something I look forward to every quarter with my job as they give us a “free day” which means we can have a day off with pay that doesn’t go against our vacation or sick time.
For Lockheed Martin they work on the every 2 (two) week pay schedule like most jobs currently do.
Annual Pay Raise & Performance appraisal program
Just like many companies Lockheed Martin uses the performance appraisal program to determine the pay increase of their employees.
Reviews are only as effective as the responses you receive. Appraisal programs are significant for the success of any organization since they are used to gauge the progress of the organization. More importantly, they help drive the administrator towards the achievement of goals and missions, of the company. Lockheed Martin ensures that their employees have a minimum of 2 appraisals per year. This ensures that the company as well as the employee are operating on the same page towards unification for the company and it also gives the employee an opportunity to express concerns or ask questions as to the work they are currently assigned.
Promotions and Reassignments:
Lockheed Martin has contracted employees as well as permanent hire employees to which they may promote, demote or reassign career or career conditional employees under a variety of circumstances. They also may make time-limited promotions of up to five years to fill temporary positions, accomplish project work, and fill positions temporarily pending reorganization or to meet other temporary needs. Most career promotions are either career-ladder or processed through the merit promotion plan.
Generally, you become eligible for promotion after spending a year in your current position and gaining experience doing the full range of the duties of the position for one year.
Because Lockheed Martin works with federal grants they may assign you a position with a contract that deems the number of months or years that you will be located in a particular region. Meaning until the work is complete or funding runs out. To which you will then be reassigned. I have seen this 1st hand as my father started of working in Fort Worth, TX and the assignment ended sooner than anticipated to which he and my mother were once again packing up the house and moving to Pearl River, LA only to be there for 3 years and finally moving to Madison Alabama where my father retired.
I know that you may think I am crazy for wanting to work with the company that is publically traded but also works with the federal government in lieu of the shutdown. However for me prior to this shut down I looked at the benefits of being with a company that allows me to work in both sectors. Because I have no desire to work in the public sector but rather the private sector even in working with Lockheed Martin I would want the Federal aspect of the job if for no other reason than health insurance upon retirement.
With Lockheed Martin all of the Federal Employees Health Benefits (FEHB) program is designed to help protect you and eligible family members from the expenses of illness and accident. Unlike many private sector health benefit plans, it provides coverage without physical examination, places no restrictions on age or physical condition, offers a wide range of plans to choose from and cannot be canceled.
You and the government jointly share the cost of the FEHB program. On average, the government pays slightly more than 70 percent of the cost. You pay your share of the premium through a payroll deduction. You can use your FEHB benefits as soon as your coverage is effective. There are no waiting periods, required medical examinations or restrictions because of age or physical condition. Of course there is the Life Insurance which is like any other companies life insurance plan. My favorite and most important for me and my family is the retirement portion offered by the Federal Government.
If you are a new employee, you are in the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS). The FERS system covers everyone hired since January 1, 1984. However, if you had previous Federal employment under the “old” federal retirement program, the Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS), and were rehired, you may have been rehired under the FERS or CSRS-Offset, which is a mix of CSRS and Social Security coverage.
FERS is a three-part retirement system consisting of Social Security coverage, a civil service annuity and the Thrift Savings Plan. In general, FERS employees contribute 7.0 percent of pay to cover the cost of their benefits: .8 percent is paid to the civil service retirement fund and goes to cover their basic annuity benefit and 6.2 percent goes to pay for Social Security benefits.
In addition, they pay 1.45 percent for Medicare coverage, there is no cap on Medicare deductions.
FERS employees retiring with an unreduced annuity after 30 years will receive a basic benefit equal to 30 percent of their high-3 years of average salary as compared to 56.25 percent for CSRS and CSRS-Offset employees. FERS employees will be eligible for a Social Security benefit at age 62.
Survivor Benefits upon Death of Employee:
Federal retirement systems protect your loved ones. Under FERS the surviving spouse of an employee who had at least 18 months of creditable civilian service may be eligible for a basic employee death benefit, as long as the spouse: Was married to the deceased for an aggregate of at least nine months (the nine-month requirement does not apply if the death was accidental).
Thrift Savings Plan:
The Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) is a valuable way to build up a nest egg for your retirement. It’s the Federal government’s version of the popular 401(k) plan. The TSP is a payroll withholding based plan. Investments are from pretax dollars and investment earnings are tax deferred until withdrawn.
FERS employees are allowed to invest up to 12 percent, to a threshold set annually by the IRS (in 2002, $11,000). Your agency will automatically contribute an amount equal to 1 percent of your basic pay each pay period. You make your own contribution by payroll deductions and your agency matches those contributions according to the following schedule:
Investment Agency Match
First 3% of basic pay $1.00 for each $1.00 you invest
Next 2% of basic pay $0.50 for each $1.00 you invest
Next 6% of basic pay 0
CSRS and CSRS-Offset employees may invest up to 9 percent of salary in the program; they get no government contributions. http://www.federaljobs.net/blog/human-resource-specialist-gs-0201-positions-in-government/
Since I look forward to early retirement working for Lockheed Martin on the Federal Government side of the business, and having health coverage past my retirement is a win for me and my family.
