Fraud investigation is certainly not for everyone. A position in a fraud unit or as a financial detective requires very distinctive personality traits, such as being equally matched with their analytical skills as well as their people skills. Fraud examiners have to be objective, like many other positions require in law enforcement, and it is absolutely crucial that they are truthful and maintain a high level of integrity. This doesn’t just go for fraud investigators, all of this applies equally to positions such as legal investigations, forensic investigations and corporate investigations.

As a fraud investigator you will be serving a dedicated workforce by preventing fraud in its many forms. Prior investigative experience is not required; we are looking for heart and some demonstrable effort in either your work history and/or education that shows you are passionate and service minded. We will provide you the paid training necessary and mentor you to ensure you can become one of the best private investigators in the industry. You will attain expertise in the art of surveillance, video and concealed camera use, locating, backgrounding and far more (Coburn Investigative Agency, 2020).

Corporate Investigator – At-Risk International, Arlington, Virginia

The Corporate Investigator is responsible for investigating reports of internal theft, vandalism, fraud, threats and workplace violence. The Corporate Investigator utilizes technology, analysis, interviewing and assessment techniques to protect and safeguard personnel, information and assets. This position is one of the Corporate Investigations team’s key liaisons with regional and local teams tasked with ensuring a safe and secure work environment. This position reports directly to the Corporate Investigations Operations Manager (At-Risk International, 2020).

PUBLIC SECTOR

Investigator – Colorado Office of the Public Defender, Centennial, Colorado

Full Time entry-level investigator position available in the Arapahoe County Public Defender’s Office. Individuals must be highly motivated to help indigent people charged with crimes and driven to not only complete assigned investigative tasks but to excel at assisting in the overall defense of public defender clients. Investigators at this level perform investigative work under the supervision of more experienced investigators and attorneys. Investigators must demonstrate an ability to successfully work with attorneys, clients, colleagues and other legal professionals. Investigators must demonstrate compassion and desire to advocate on behalf of our clients (State of Colorado, 2020).

Education

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in criminal justice, social sciences or other degree directly related to the investigative field OR Equivalent education, training or experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills and competencies required to perform at this level may substitute for education (State of Colorado, 2020).

Forensic Investigator – State of Maryland, Baltimore, Maryland

The main purpose of this position is to conduct investigations of cases that are referred to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME). This position will conduct investigations to include: screening cases, gathering information, conducting examinations of the human body at the location of the incident, and/or producing an investigation report that will assist the Forensic Pathologist in the determination of cause and manner of death (State of Maryland, 2020).

Education

An Associate of Arts degree in Health Sciences, Police Science, or Forensics from an accredited college or university (State of Maryland, 2020).

As you can see there are many opportunities out there for entry level criminal justice professionals in the world of investigations. While many of these positions do not list any information on career advancement or promotional opportunities, it does not mean that they do not exist. Again these are entry level positions that require minimal experience; there will always be opportunities for advancement and promotion as expertise is gained. Advancement may be more available in the public sector than it is in the private sector but advancement opportunities can always be sought out internally or with another employer.
