TYPE I CONSTRUCTION: FIRE RESISTIVE
The local hospital in my community is a fairly new building. The hospital is a very large building with many patients and employees. This is the largest hospital in the entire county, so many people count on this hospital as a safe haven for themselves, family members, and friends.

TYPE I CONSTRUCTION: FIRE RESISTIVE
Saint Michaels Hospital
Value of Fire Resistant Materials
Spray-applied structural steel insulation The coating provides protection to structure during a fire. The current politically correct term for spray fireproofing is “Spray-Applied Fire Resistive Material (SFRM).” (Fire protection of structural steel…for dummies, Jim DeStefano, P.E., structure magazine, 2005)Steel structural beams encased in concrete The concrete provides protection to beams during a fire. Fire resistant compartments The compartments prevents the fire from spreading to different areas and floors. Automatic sprinklers The sprinklers help extinguish the fire.

Building Fire Concerns
Large amounts of oxygen machines Large number of peopleLarge number of helpless people Long stairwells
TYPE II CONSTRUCTION: NONCOMBUSTIBLE
The local Fairgrounds Arena in my community is very old, but is a metal building with steel structural beams, so it does not create a big fire hazard. The arena is used for rodeos, sporting events, concerts, circuses, and other community events.

TYPE II CONSTRUCTION: NONCOMBUSTIBLE
Fairgrounds Arena
Value of Fire Resistant Materials
Steel structural beams Metal is noncombustible, which allows more time for the fire to be put out and helps prevent the fire from spreading. Metal materials for walls and roof Metal is noncombustible, which allows more time for the fire to be put out and helps prevent the fire from spreading. Automatic sprinklers The sprinklers help extinguish the fire.

Building Fire Concerns
Steel structural beams are not coated with fire resistant materialsLarge number of people in building during eventsPeople must exit down tall bleacher seats to get to exits
TYPE IV CONSTRUCTION: HEAVY TIMBER
One of the buildings on the installation where I work was constructed with the heavy timber construction type. The building is very old and the timber creates a big fire hazard.

Building Fire Concerns
Wood trusses and weight baring beams are highly flammable. Roof collapse due to wood weight baring beams.
SAFEST BUILDING: SCHOOL INDOOR PRACTICE FACILITY
One of the schools in my community has an indoor practice facility. The facility has a steel structure and concrete exterior walls. The facility has an open floor plan which makes exiting the facility very easy. There are emergency exits at all four corners of the building. The facility was constructed with fire restrictive materials. I would like to show others how the facility was constructed and encourage them to use the fire resistive model on more structures in the future.
