AUTOMATIC SPRINKLER SYSTEMS-INSTALLATION-INSPECTION-MAINTENANCE

The installation of a new automatic sprinkler system will be costly, but will be a great investment for the future. According to the National Fire Protection Association, sprinklers are effective in 96 percent of cases (Osha requirements for automatic sprinkler systems, (n.d. ). In Allqualitylaborinc.com, para. 1). The automatic sprinkler system must be inspected and maintained after an automatic sprinkler system is installed. The inspection and maintenance will be costly, but will be very important to protecting the lives of our employees. The picture provided is an example of what an automatic sprinkler system looks like.

WET PIPE SPRINKLER SYSTEMS-INSTALLATION

Wet pipe fire protection sprinkler systems are installed more often than most of the other types of sprinkler systems. This is because it is more reliable, simple, and the only components being automatic sprinklers and the automatic alarm check valve (not always but common). This automatic water supplies water under pressure to the piping system (New fire sprinkler systems, (n.d.). In Acadianfire.com, para. 7)

WET PIPE SPRINKLER SYSTEMS- INSPECTION & Maintenance

The reliability and effectiveness of automatic sprinkler systems has been demonstrated many times. For the most part, automatic sprinkler systems are mechanically quite simple and provide reliable protection with a minimum amount of care. However, a simple program of inspection, testing and maintenance is necessary to ensure the system will operate as designed (Risktopics, (12/2007). Wet pipe sprinkler system inspection and maintenance). Components of a wet-pipe sprinkler system must be inspected by a trained inspector which can be an in-house employee or an outside contractor. There are items that must be inspected weekly, monthly, quarterly, semiannually, and annually. Any issues found during inspections must be addressed promptly by a qualified sprinkler maintenance worker.

DRY PIPE SPRINKLER SYSTEMS- INSTALLATION

Dry pipe systems are usually installed in spaces which the ambient temperature can get cold enough to freeze the water in the pipe system which will cause the system to be inoperable. This type of system is usually installed in unheated buildings, garages, outside canopies that are attached to heated buildings or in refrigerated coolers. Dry pipe sprinkler systems are the second most common system used. This system cannot be installed unless the range of ambient temperatures gets above 40 degrees Fahrenheit in regions that use NFPA regulations. Water is also not present in this system until it operates (New fire sprinkler systems, (n.d.). In Acadianfire.com, para. 9)

DRY PIPE SPRINKLER SYSTEMS-INSTALLATION & MAINTENANCE

Regular inspection, testing, and maintenance of dry pipe sprinkler valves and associated quick-opening devices are critical to ensure effective performance of a sprinkler system. All inspections and tests should be performed in accordance with NFPA 25, Standard for the Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance of Water-Based Fire Protections Systems, published by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) (Sprinkler system-dry pipe valves, inspection, and testing checklist, (12/2012). PREACTION SPRINKLER SYSTEMS-INSTALLATION

Pre-action fire sprinkler systems employ the basic concept of a dry pipe system in that water is not normally contained within the pipes. The difference, however, is that water is held from piping by an electrically operated valve, known as a pre-action valve. Valve operation is controlled by independent flame, heat, or smoke detection. Two separate events must happen to initiate sprinkler discharge. First, the detection system must identify a developing fire and then open the pre-action valve. This allows water to flow into system piping, which effectively creates a wet pipe sprinkler system. Second, individual sprinkler heads must release to permit water flow onto the fire. In some instances, the pre-action fire sprinkler system may be set up with a double interlock in which pressurized air or nitrogen is added to system piping. The purpose of this feature is two-fold: first to monitor piping for leaks and second to hold water from system piping in the event of inadvertent detector operation. The most common application for this system type is in freezer warehouses (Pre-action fire sprinkler system, 2018. In vfpfire.com)

PREACTION SPRINKLER SYSTEMS-INSPECTION & MAINTENANCE

Regular, periodic inspection and testing is the best defense against system failure so that you may continue to operate your business securely and efficiently. Reliable Fire & Security offers complete inspection and testing services for fire extinguishers, fire alarm, sprinkler systems, special hazard suppression systems and restaurant hood suppression systems. We also, provide complete fire pump testing services, and foam system testing and analysis (Inspection and maintenance services, (n.d.). In Reliable fire & security, para. 1)

DELUGE SPRINKLER SYSTEMS-INSTALLATION

A deluge fire sprinkler system is similar to a pre-action system except the sprinkler heads are open and the pipe is not pressurized with air. Deluge systems are connected to a water supply through a deluge valve that is opened by the operation of a smoke or heat detection system. The detection system is installed in the same area as the sprinklers. When the detection system is activated water discharges through all of the sprinkler heads in the system. Deluge systems are used in places that are considered high hazard areas such as power plants, aircraft hangars and chemical storage or processing facilities. Deluge systems are needed where high velocity suppression is necessary to prevent fire spread (Deluge fire sprinkler system, 2018, In vfpfire.com)

DELUGE SPRINKLER SYSTEMS-INSPECTION & MAINTENANCE

A simple program of inspection, testing and maintenance for your sprinkler system will greatly reduce the chance of malfunction during a fire. This effort can be incorporated into a larger scope fire safety inspection program (Risktopics, (12/2007). Wet pipe sprinkler system inspection and maintenance)
