Health Care Providers and Products

The healthcare structure of the US is one that is very complex. This is because of the numerous levels and specializations that exist among the healthcare providers. Under the regulations of the federal government, the range of healthcare services extends to any service whose intention is to promote the well-being of an individual.. They include public health services or preventive treatment; primary care or ambulatory services; acute or chronic care; support services; rehabilitation services, mental health care; emergency attention and disaster management; dental care; veteran health services; and health services for Indians. A healthcare provider can also include any one from whom a college or a workers’ group health plan will recognize and accept medical certification to verify a claim for compensation. Every healthcare provider gives a single service or product, but in the long-run they act together for the general wellbeing of a patient. The two healthcare provider services that are going to be discussed in this paper are mental health services and rehabilitative services. A basic description of the care service and the products that goes hand in hand with them is given.

Mental Health Services

The words “mental health services” present a rather relatively simple definition of control and treatment of mental illnesses in the case of a lay person. Sounds very simple? Not so. In real sense these services have a complex view point when you look on the deep end of diagnosis, pathogenesis and treatment. There are numerous determinants in evaluating the possibility if one is suffering from a mental illness or not. One determinant is; did the mental disorder result from abuse or trauma? Abuse can be mental or physical. Trauma is self afflicted due to use of drugs and intoxication with excessive alcohol. Another cause of mental illnesses can be deduced from family history. Does your family have a history of mental illnesses? Does a gene that predisposes one to mental related problems run in your family DNA? May there is one family member who has ever been institutionalized due to an illness of mental diagnostic features.

If there is any positive answer to any of those queries, then mental health services come into play. There are a huge number of mental health services providers in the US. Some of the providers are specialized in evaluation of the psychology and psychotherapy but they rarely bestow any medicine or prescribe it at all. These health providers in most cases are psychologists in schools or psychology clinicians in healthcare centers. Then there are mental health specialists or social clinicians who offer just counseling. They also do not participate in prescription or medicine dispensation.

The mental health services providers can align with primary care physicians who can guide in getting the best medication or therapy for a particular patient’s situation. They may recommend the case to a specialist physician if the situation is too serious and fragile for them to handle. Apart from prescribing medication to the mental illness, the primary care physician can recommend the patient to a specific community support group that suits his/her needs.

Rehabilitative Services

Rehabilitation services are progressive treatment sessions devised to accelerate the recovery process from various illnesses such as brain traumas, strokes or any other sickness that affect either the central nervous system or the peripheral nervous system. The services also extend to those recovering from drugs addiction and abuse. The goal or intention of these services is to restore normalcy to a patient up-to the possible extent.

There are a number of rehabilitative services. These include occupational therapy, breathing therapy, speech therapy, physical therapy, auditory therapy, and registered dietary tacticians. While these are the commonly known, other services exist, which the health industry considers as rehabilitative, but the American population is not aware that they are rehabilitative. Such services include services in nursing homes, in clinical practices at hospitals, and sports medical therapy. A general medical practitioner is best placed for consultation about the right rehabilitative therapy that one should enroll in.

In the case of nursing homes, there is a general observation that the objectives of a rehabilitation care facility are dependent on its residents. There are two variant groups of residents in American nursing homes: (1) some require chronic care as they no longer have the ability to take care of themselves at their own private home; (2) the other group is one stay for utmost 30 days, they are typically admitted following hospitalization with an illness that require therapy for full recovery. As a result, the demand for rehabilitation services in the US is steadily rising due to an influx in the old population who need rehabilitative nursing care.

Conclusion

Mental health services are immensely vital for American citizens and the world population at large as they help patients regain sanity despite the existence of illnesses that cause irreversible damage to the brain. Rehabilitative services are equally important for the well-being of US population. They help a patient to get back to his/her physical and mental fitness and the two services can complement each other to achieve better results in the long-run. For example an occupational therapist might be needed in the case of where a person tries to harm him/her own self due to a mental sickness. Thus they are essential services for the continued well-being of each and every person in the society.
