Professional Identity and Stewardship – Part II: Leadership

This is a discussion about leadership and educational goals, and concepts of leadership within UPMC Pinnacle. Leadership styles within different companies vary widely. Within UPMC Pinnacle there is a Leadership Academy that all supervisors and management follow. Leadership styles can make a great difference to employees, departmental teams, and service to patients or clients. Below a discussion regarding Noemi Shuttlesworth and the leadership styles she follows will be discussed.

Background

Noemi Shuttlesworth worked at Pinnacle Health prior to merging with UPMC and Tristan Associates. She was a staff radiographer at Harrisburg Hospital and was then chosen as a team leader for the radiologic technologists. She received several years of training under our prior supervisor. She then applied for a leadership position for outpatient radiography when our current supervisor was promoted to Manager. She easily stepped into the role with training provided by UPMC Pinnacle. A Leadership Academy is dedicated to take new leaders under their wing and provide information and structured classes to adjust to the new position. It provides a range of development opportunities, addressing the levels and needs of leadership through programs.

Leadership Career

With the acceptance of Noemi’s new role she took the first step in the Leadership Academy, which is an instructor-led orientation is offered quarterly for those individuals who are new to a management role within UPMC (UPMC ).  Management Orientation is a one-day orientation class designed to address the practical things that those new to UPMC management need to know right away, i.e. the important “first things”(UPMC ).  The class not only offers practical information, but the class also provides the opportunity to meet the people directly responsible for key areas, who serve as class presenters. The next series of classes provide information on human resources and policies to follow. Additional classes provide information on delegating duties, effectiveness in leadership, productivity and waste reduction to improve cost center budgeting, and motivational techniques. Noemi found the classes to be an integral part of her experience and training to deal with situations that were not as familiar to her with her new duties. It was a beneficial experience to meet other leaders within the system and get feedback.

Defining Professionalism

Noemi defines professionalism in her role by responsibility to uphold the UPMC Pinnacle Mission and Values, but also to be an ear to the staff she supervises to take in any suggestions, problems, and new ideas that could benefit the organization. She also upholds the standards of employee goals within the system requiring prompt attendance, additional activities to gain pay raises at higher percentages, and the standards of safety for patients and staff. She feels it is her duty to make that the top priority since we serve the community and lives are dependent on our care.

Leadership in Radiography

Noemi provides a sense of approachability to our staff. She takes great concern for our health and families care, while still expecting us to hold our duties at top priority she understand that emergencies happen and are understandable. If you approach her with an issues, you are free to discuss the problems in an honest manor. She has great concern for patient care as well. This is the goals of our department to provide a great experience for all. She contacts us monthly to do what is referred to as rounding. This is to check in with us and see what is a concern and questions that we may have about the company. Monthly meetings are scheduled as well to discuss productivity and any updates within the department or changes we need to be aware of. I feel well informed on changes within the department.

Stewards of Healthcare

I feel Noemi is a steward to our staff providing professionalism and the awareness of future trends that we need to foresee in our duties. I feel she gives staff her time and advocates many new ideas for our department and how to alleviate concerns. She is the speaker for our group and does an excellent job at doing so. She gives praise and encourages many to carry on. She is able to set demands if needed and still gives the sense that she is advocating and caring about your stress and opportunities that you may have to develop.

Summary

Noemi may want to continue to provide leadership goals to staff and still wants to improve upon some leadership goals for herself before moving on to other roles in her career. I am sure UPMC Pinnacle finds Noemi to be an excellent leader for our staff and brings the professionalism to the department.
