Database Architecture and Design

Part 2:

1. Database Architecture and Design

A database is stored collection of data for any type of information made accessibility, and retrieval. In healthcare, adatabase helps replace the paper documents, file folders, and filing cabinets. For the most part, healthcare databases are used as the foundation for running the many transactional systems flooding the industry. The OLTP database structure accommodates the creation of a wide range of transactional applications: EHRs, lab systems, financial systems, patient identification, ADT tracking, administration, billing and payment processing, research, HR, and education. Name any application in use at a hospital or in a physician’s office, and the chances are good that it runs on an OLTP database.  As a replacement, an electronic health record (EHR) is a greatexample of such an application. For instance, when a patient shows up at the front desk, you search for their name or their blood pressure in the EHR and instantly pop up. Speed is severely needed and a primary factor with EHR, but we have the OLTP database architecture to thank for it.

2. How databases are used in Medical Facilities

In healthcare, a database helps replace the paper documents, file folders, and filing cabinets. As a replacement, an electronic health record (EHR) is a great example of such an application. For instance, when a patient shows up at the front desk, you search for their name or their blood pressure in the EHR and instantly pop up. Speed is severely needed and a primary factor with EHR, but we have the OLTP database architecture to thank for it.
