What are the common sources of reimbursement for assisted living

Private Pay; when an individual uses their own necessary funds to pay for care.

Private pay is the largest source of reimbursement for assisted living care.

          Public; Medicaid

Medicaid usually does not cover and is state funded; Medicaid only pays for certain number of hours and certain amount of days. Reimbursement usually comes with what type of service was performed and what the individual received in the state they were provided in.  All stated vary.

          Insurance; Medicare and Long-Term Care

What governing bodies oversee skilled nursing facilities

Local; Many skilled nursing facilities are protected by state and federal regulations to prevent abuse and to provide great quality of care

How do these differ between states? States vary in the number of rules they enforce in nursing homes but must still comply with federal laws that are designed to protect the residents that live there.

State; the state conducts a search of the facility to make sure it follows their state regulations.  However, the state’s certificate that is given to the facility is in approval form the CMS (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services)

How do these differ between states? All states have the same guidelines when it comes to nursing home facilities.  Some states have harsher guidelines to follow that other states.

Federal; CARF; Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities; a nonprofit organization that focuses on advancing the quality of services in health and human services.  Services range from child to elderly individuals that receive treatment.

How do these differ between states? Cost is different between the states and the tax laws are different as well too.

What are the common sources of reimbursement for skilled nursing

Skilled nursing is reimbursed by Medicare and some Long-Term Care Facilities.  With Medicare if the individual no longer needs or no longer qualifies for the high level of care the facility offers then they must rely on other means.  Which could mean for the patient to pay out of pocket for their care or investigate other types of insurance.  Some residents may have to move into an ALF then in a nursing facility.  This would be a lot cheaper for the resident and will still be able to get the care they need.
