Case Study 1: Statistical Thinking in Healthcare
In order to understand and try to come up with a solution to the issues associated with this case study we need to first understand what is Statistical Thinking and what it involves. Statistical Thinking provides a common way of doing things for perpetual improvement in our daily cycle. It affects every aspect of our lives and everything we do. According to the textbook, Statistical thinking is not a collection of statistical methods, but is rather a way of thinking about improvement, and how to best utilize statistical methods (Hoerl, R., Snee, R. D.,2012).
In our case study one of the main issue found in the HMO pharmacy was medication inaccuracies. There are numerous complaints and even a few lawsuits due to prescription errors. Errors in medication dispensing is one of the leading causes of death in the United States (Rama P. Nair, RPh; Daya Kappil, RPh; and Tonja M. Woods, PharmD, 2010). The process map and the SIPOC process below shows the process of filling a prescription and also some of the errors that may occur during this process. Also identifying the possible causes of the problems by examining the SIPOC process. The first step in the prescription process is receiving the prescription. There are several methods that can be used in this process. It can be written, faxed, sent online or via mobile devices. The
