MGT 415 week 2 discussion 1

Identify specific actions a manager can take at each stage of the process to best help a group reach the performing stage.I have had the pleasure and opportunity to be a lead on a few group projects that my organization has placed in my hands, but never consciously used a training method or technique to achieve planned goals. When I read the steps involved in Tuckman’s method I realized I was somewhat incorporating it in past projects. Per our text those phases are identified as, “The phases of development are “forming,” “storming,” “norming,” “performing,” and “adjourning”” (Losh, 2011). I always had people who knew each other as co-workers and usually friends in my experiences so I’ll try to identify what a manager in charge of meeting a goal with relative strangers may try to accomplish. The first stage is “forming” and this is just an initial “feeling out” phase and I believe it is important for the leader to give information about what the task is and what they hope to accomplish. The manager should set the tone on what is to be expected and appropriate conduct as well. Next, “storming” seems like a critical development phase in the process. The possibilities of conflicts are high in this phase so I believe by meeting it head on and acknowledging that there will be differences of opinion and doubts, you can turn a chaotic, awkward time into a brainstorming and open dialogue opportunity. “Norming” seems to be a naturally occurrence as team members get to know each other’s work style and personalities, as well as the task at hand has started taking shape and roles are being defined. I would try to encourage this by making myself available to either help with situations that arise on the work or personality front.Losh, S.
