Mobile App Part 1 (Work Breakdown Structure)

CIS348

In this paper I will summarize project requirements on the development of a mobile application. I will discuss other assumptions such as budget, human resources, workload, and environmental dependencies. Subsequently, I will define a work breakdown structure and describe the methodology behind constructing one. Finally, I will use an open source program to illustrates main tasks, items, work packages, breakdown structure, and duration estimates for each task.

Before beginning development, the type of platform that this application will be running on will need to be determined. Security requirements also need to be taking into consideration to ensure the protection of sensitive data, to authenticate and authorize users. With this information, the PM will now be able to put together the plan phases, staffing patterns, and shift as needed to remain within budget constraints.

As the PM, I would prefer to use the Agile method to complete this project. Utilizing the Agile method, I would compose the teams, provide the project timeline and budget. The scrum master will determine the sprint timeline, how many sprints will be needed to meet deliverables and timelines as well as rough cost estimates. My focus would be to meet regularly with the scrum master and ensure the project stays on schedule and within budget.

However, for this project I am using the PMBOK way of project management. PMBOK looks at the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) as a deliverable oriented hierarchical decomposition of the work that is to be executed by the project team. I would compose my teams, and knowing the scope of the project, I would meet with them to break the project down into larger phases with smaller, more manageable sub phases and create the visual representation. The WBS and visual can be used by the teams as the outline for the project further showing which group or department has which task, the completion timeline, and the allocated budget to complete that task. The below figure is a graphic representation of the application WBS.
