Week 6: Reading Research Literature Worksheet

Name: _______________________________________________________________________Date:_________________________________________________________________________Complete the following required worksheet using the required article for the current session. Access the required article from the assignment guidelines.
Purpose of the Study: Using information from the required article and your own words, summarize the purpose of the study. Describe what the study is about. The purpose of the study was to generate a comparison between the effectiveness of liquid artificial tears “Lacribell; Latinofarma) and artificial tears gel (Vidisic Gel; Bausch and Lomb) CITATION deA19 l 1033 (de Araujo, et al., 2019). The two artificial tears are used in the prevention of dry eye in adult intensive care unit patients.
Research & Design: Using information from the required article and your own words, summarize the description of the type of research and the design of the study. Include how it supports the purpose (aim or intent) of the study. The researchers used a randomized control trial. The trial included two teams with each group comprising 70 participants assigned to 1 of 2 treatment options. The use of the two interventions was measured on five consecutive days, where a researcher who was unaware of the treatment assignment assessed the participants’ eyes using fluorescein eye stain test and the Schirmer test for dry eye CITATION deA19 l 1033 (de Araujo, et al., 2019).
Sample: Using information from the required article and your own words, summarize the population (sample) for the study; include key characteristics, sample size, sampling technique. The sample population included 140 participants CITATION deA19 l 1033 (de Araujo, et al., 2019). The criteria used to include the participants were to ensure that they are admitted to the intensive care unit. In addition, the participants were supposed to be have attained the age of 18 years or older. The participants were supposed to have undergone no diagnosis of dry eye at admission and receipt of mechanical ventilation. The participants were expected to have a blink rate of less than five times per minute. Finally, each participant was required to score seven or less on the Glasgow Coma Scale. Based on the information form the article, stratified sampling was done in this case. Stratified sampling entails dividing participants into groups based on some characteristics or guidelines presented by researchers. Such guidelines influence the study in one way or the other.
Data Collection: Using information from the required article and your own words, summarize one data that was collected and how the data was collected from the study.Data were collected on five consecutive days. The researcher collecting the data performed an ocular assessment for each participant. In addition, ocular assessment consisted of the Schirmer test and the fluorescein eye stain test. The test involved placing a strip of Whatman filter paper grade 41 or 50, which measured 5mm wide and 35 mm long with the tip folded in the bottom of the lower conjunctival sac in the temporal region.

Data Analysis: Using information from the required article and your own words, summarize one of the data analysis/ tests performed or one method of data analysis from the study; include what you know/learned about the descriptive or statistical test or data analysis method.Data analysis began with two of the researchers independently entering the collected data into the Epi Info software program, version 3.5.1. Data were analyzed for consistency and then extracted and further analyzed in the R-3.2.3 software CITATION deA19 l 1033 (de Araujo, et al., 2019). Measurements of average, standard deviation, and frequency were identified. Further, categorical variables in the two intervention groups were compared using the Fisher exact test. On the other hand, the continuous variables were compared using the Mann-Whitney test.
Limitations: Using information from the required article and your own words, summarize one limitation reported in the study. One of the limitations identified was that the sample consisted only of patients admitted to an ICU, and the interventions were delivered twice a day. The problem in this approach was that the recommended administration of the interventions should be regularly whenever necessary. Another limitation in this study was putting the patients with a Glasgow Coma Scale score of 7 or lower under sedation for five days. This action does not accurately represent sedation practices outside Brazil among other developing countries.
Findings/Discussion: Using information from the required article and your own words, summarize one of the authors’ findings/discussion reported in the study. Include one interesting detail you learned from reading the study. The findings of the research indicated that artificial tears gel is more effective compared to liquid artificial tears (RR = 0.400; 95% CI, 0.166-0.964; P = .04) in the prevention of dry eye in adult ICU patients CITATION deA19 l 1033 (de Araujo, et al., 2019). The researchers noted that no previous research or literature was published comparing the two interventions. The dry eye incidence during the evaluation period was from 1% to 21% in the liquid artificial tears group while the artificial tears gel group was from 3% to 9% respectively. The use of block randomization for the allocation of participants ensured even distribution of participants between the groups within the established data collection time frame. The discussion noted that liquid artificial tears or artificial tears gel could not directly prevent the evaporation of tear film in patients with lagophthalmos. Nevertheless, the artificial tears gel helped the patients’ upper and lower eyelids adhered. Therefore, the researchers concluded by noting that artificial tears gel is more effective compared to liquid artificial tears in preventing dry eye among critically ill patients.
Reading Research Literature: Summarize why it is important for you to read and understand research literature. Summarize what you learned from completing the reading research literature activity worksheet.Reading and understanding research literature creates opportunities to identify recent trends in practice. Further, it is a way to identify theories that have been identified especially in nursing. Completing this worksheet helped me appreciate each detail in a research article. I have to realize that all components of a research paper are linked to each other and influence the next step or method to be used. I have realized that the population sample, method, research aims are essential for a study to achieve the desired results CITATION AAC08 l 1033 (AACN, 2008). I learned that trials just like in the reviewed case above, researchers need to observe the routine procedures to achieve credible and valid outcomes. This is to ensure that the findings of the research inform the nursing practice hence promoting evidence-based practice CITATION QSE181 l 1033 (QSEN, 2018).
