NRS-440VN TOPIC 2 DQ1 – PPACA

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) was passed into legislation in March of 2010. Identify the impact of this legislation on your nursing practice by choosing two key nursing provisions outlined in the topic material “Nursing and Health Reform.” Discuss how these two provisions have impacted, or will impact, your current practice of nursing.

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) impacted my nursing practice directly through the two key provisions: Public health workforce recruitment and retention programs and Training in family medicine, general internal medicine, general pediatrics, and physician assistantship.

The public health workforce recruitment and retention program impacts me now because it can repay a certain percentage of school loans in exchange for time spent working for a public health agency (hospital) for 3 years. This is helpful because while I am able to work and continue to gain experience through my employment, it is also helping me continue my education. Financial burdens of school can be difficult but with the help of this provision, it makes it possible and manageable.

The training in family medicine, general internal medicine, general pediatrics and physician assistantship will have an impact on me in the future. This provision establishes grant programs for hospitals, medical schools, academically and affiliated PA training programs to develop and operate accredited training programs for the provision of primary care (Nursing and Health Reform, n.d). This will impact me in the future because my passion is for to transition in a nurse practioner program and provide direct care for adult patients and having these grants in place will give me an even further developr my education to my reach my ultimate career goal.
