Why is understanding the health care system at the local level important to consider when planning an EBP implementation? Conduct research and solicit anecdotal evidence from your course mentor that you will take into consideration for your own change project.
When planning an EBP project one must consider the health care system where they want it to be implemented. For example, what kind of resources will be available and is the health care system ready to implement a new EBP project. Looking within the local level helps to identify needs that will benefit the patients the healthcare system supports. EBP can address problems identified to the local health care system and will use current clinician’s expertise and will take into account patients values and preferences (Bardsley, Eich, Esche, Kropkowski, McLaughlin, Risch & Warren, 2016). On the local level, some health care systems do not have librarians to help RN’s with research for EBP, so this is a major consideration.
Talking with my mentor this week was very helpful. We were able to discuss the challenges that I would face if I were to go through with implementing this project. Keeping in mind that this is a smaller facility I would need to thoroughly discuss the process of implementation and if there is any budget necessary. I would need to make sure that I have the support of administration. Resistance is another challenge we discussed. There seems to be a lot of push back to minimize the number of bed-linen layers used. The majority of the nursing staff understand that multiple layers under the patient puts them at increased risk. However, very few have encouraged or welcomed this type of change when discussed in the past.
