Leadership Plan
The leadership of any particular organization greatly determines the achievement of goals set out by the organization. Several theories on leadership have been put forward to accommodate the schools of thought which attempt to describe how leadership should be executed. There also exist various leadership styles which may be applied by the leader in the leadership of an organization. Various traits possessed by the leader are also very important in determining the achievement of organizational goals. Described below is a plan that would be used to motivate, communicate and overcome opposition from staff and other stakeholders in an organization.
The leadership theory that would be used is the ‘contingency theory’ whereby leadership style chosen will be based on situational variables. The leadership style used will be customized to fit the situation present in the organization. The contingency leadership theory provides for flexibility in the leadership style chosen and enables the application of the best leadership style for achievement of desired results. This motivates the workforce and also leads to minimal opposition from staff and stakeholders (Bolden et al, 2003).
The two leadership styles which may be used in this organization include the democratic style of leadership and the consultative style. The democratic style is whereby issues are brought to table and the opinion of the workforce and the stakeholders is invited and they get to participate in decision making. This facilitates transparency and accountability and motivates the workforce, facilitates communication between the staff and stakeholders with leaders. The consultative style is whereby the leader seeks the opinion of staff and stakeholders but the role of decision making at the end of the day, remains with the leader (Bolden et al, 2003).
Two leadership characteristics which should be possessed by a leader include integrity and accountability. Accountability is the ability of the leader to explain for all their actions and projects or undertakings in the organization. This reduces the number of questions raised by staff and stakeholders. Integrity is also an important characteristic of leadership. This is the ability of the leader to display moral values in their undertakings in the organization. This helps the leader to avoid unethical behavior which may arouse demotivation and opposition from staff and stakeholders.
In conclusion, leadership is an integral part of an organization which should be structured carefully with utilization of a theory and styles relevant to an organization. Characteristics of leadership which are acceptable should also be utilized by leaders in order to achieve organizational goals.
