Skydive Chicago is one of the United States’ premier skydiving resorts, serving skydivers ranging in skills from first time jumpers to internationally competitive freefly teams. Skydive Chicago has one of the largest skydiving resort in the world, located in Ottawa, Illinois. It services skydivers ranging in skills from first time jumpers to internationally competitive freefly teams. Their Advanced Freefall Program (AFP) was developed by Roger Nelson A back in the 1980’s. The AFP has turned in to the most used and complete curriculum in skydiving realm today (Skydive Chicago, 2013). Each student in Skydive Chicago’s training program makes a series of progressive training jumps under the direct supervision of a United State Parachute Association Jumper. Skydive Chicago is a successful and profitable business, but to keep a competitive edge over its competitors, and increase its efficiency; they need to understand the concepts of an information system and how to execute it to their advantage.

As stated by O’Brien and Marakas, (2011) “information system is a system that accepts data resources as input and processes them into information products as output… skydive Chicago’s information system depends on the resources of people (students, jumpmasters), hardware (Video cameras, VCR, and VHS tapes), software (record, play and copy videos), data (Video. And archived video tapes), and networks (VCR, camera cables) to perform input (Video tapes of student jumps), processing (View and copy the videos), output (Copy tapes for student and update video library), storage (VHS tapes, and video library) control activities (Management policy and training room library access) that transform data resources (Videos), into information products. (O’Brien and Marakas, 2011) So, how can information systems benefit the students?

Skydiving students can benefit from the information systems at Skydive Chicago starting with its unique online processing, via online website. Students have access to information about the different skydiving lessons and packages they offer events, USPA National Championships calendar schedule, and a discussion forum to participate in and ask questions about the training or pervious jump sessions.

The students having access to the drop zone’s training where they can watch video clips to help them prepare for their next training jump, and lets them see if they are making mistakes or not. In watching these video clips it gives the student the feedback they need to become more aware of their mistakes so they can take precautionary steps to decrease their mistakes and improve their safety. They often copy their videos onto a personal tape for future reference. How can this information system benefit Skydive Chicago?

This information system can benefit Skydive Chicago by Jumpmasters video their student’s jumps. Students use the feedback these videos provide to identify mistakes. Jumpmasters copy well-executed student skydives to the facility’s tape library. Jumpmasters also use these videos to evaluate their training method’s effectiveness. Also as mentioned earlier, the students get clear excess to the training room to video clips to prepare for future jumps. This step saves jumpmasters, who are paid per jump, considerable time.
