Dealing with Disrespectful People

Disrespectful behavior comes in very many different forms. People have a different way of behaving under different circumstances. People relate really well in places where respect is upheld (Brinkman & Kirschner, 2012). This is because of the peace that comes along with having respect for everyone. In our day to day endeavors, we must come across different personalities. Some which will make us happy and some that will hurt us. Disrespect comes in ways like name-calling, lying about someone, talking to someone in a disrespectful manner, laughing at someone and even bulling. These disrespectful behaviors hurt people’s feelings at the very least. People feel disregarded when disrespected. However in a world with millions of people, it is important to learn how to deal with different people with different personalities.

The places we go to work are major parts of our everyday lives. People with different personalities meet here. In this case, an employer has to deal with each and every employee’s behavior, whereby it is very easy to find a rude, insensitive and disrespectful employee to his or her fellow workmates (Hendricks, 2014) . The first step to dealing with such behavior is writing down the actual acts that have caused the problems and documenting them properly. This includes the kind of act, the parties involved, the time that the incident occurred and the possible consequences of the act.

Assessing the employee’s behavior comes in next. This is to help the employer know how to implement a disciplinary plan. He or she must find out firs the reasons why the employee behaves in such a manner. This is because sometimes personal problems sometimes affect how people behave towards others (“Office-Politics » How to deal with a dismissive, disrespectful and arrogant employee?” n.d.). An informal meeting with the employee is the next way to deal with the issue. This meeting helps both parties be able to pinpoint the issues at hand. The employer tells the employee about the concerns he has received from other employees and listens to him or her to find out reasons for the unbecoming behavior. Listening to the employee is key; one should not assume that the reason for behaving in that manner is because someone is a bad person.

When the employer has understood the employees concerns, resolving the issue come in. In a case where the employee does not give a reason that can be justify his or her behaviors, the employer should make sure he or she owns the mistake. He or she should know that the behavior was unacceptable and should assure the employer of the willingness to change. The employer should remind him or her the detailed ways of how one has to behave towards their colleagues. A disciplinary action comes in depending on the number of times chances have been given for the employee to change. These can be warnings given verbally, written warnings and termination when it becomes a critical issue.

Dealing with disrespectful people requires a lot of wisdom. This is because every human being has a different personality. People have ways of justifying their actions no matter how it hurts others. Hence, dealing with disrespectful people becomes a challenge. However, a leader should always have ways of gracefully dealing with all types of employees.
