Subject: Credentials and mastery of Operations Management

I have been exposed to the field of operations management for quite a long period of time. I came across the concepts of this vast-field of operations management since the time i enrolled for a degree course in operations management. This is where I interacted with many concepts and tools that help organizations improve their operations. From here, I have been working in different organizations. With the help of other colleagues in different organizations, we have been able to solve a number of contemporary issues revolving around this field of operations management.

Experience

Throughout my life, I have been able to do some projects in this particular field of operations management. Some was individual projects while other one was done as a team; this was ultimately done to cultivate the value of teamwork.

Project 1

The first individual project was about inventory control. This is a planned approach of determining what to order, when to order and how much to order. This also involves health balancing of stock to ensure that, there is no interruption of production process and sales throughout the production process.

In this project, I had set my goals that I had to achieve at the end of the project period. These are explained below:

At the end of this project, this project had a lot of positive impact on the general performance of the business. The benefits that accrued to the business are as follows:

  1. To ensure adequate supply of products to customers without any shortage at any time
  2. To ensure a certain minimum level of working capital to facilitate liquidity
  3. To ensure efficient purchasing, storing, consumption and accountability of materials in a transparent manner
  4. To maintain timely record of inventories and maintain stock within some desired limits

Project 2

  1. There was improvement in customer’s relationship because of timely delivery of goods and services
  2. There was smooth and uninterrupted production cycle
  3. Efficient utilization of working capital translating to higher profits for the organization
  4. It leads to elimination of possibility of duplicate ordering due to coding process

The second project that I carried out individually: this project was about standardization and simplification of organizational products. Standardization entails production of maximum variety of materials, parts and processes; establishment of standards or units of measure by which quality, quantity, value and performance.

This project did not benefit only one section of the organization but instead, it benefited different departments. Some of these departments that benefited from this project are: design department, manufacturing department, marketing department, production planning department, production control department, purchase and stock control department and quality control department.

The benefits that accrued to the organization from this project are:

On the other hand, simplification of closely related to standardization but this entails process of reducing the variety of products manufactured; it is concerned with reduction of product range, assemblies, parts, materials and design. This benefited the organization on the following ways;

  1. It helps supervisors to run their departments efficiently
  2. Better control of cost by installation of standard costing
  3. Improvement of work study section due to efficient breakdown of operations and effective work measurement
  4. Better inspection and quality control is enhanced
  5. It leads to opportunities for more efficient tool design
  6. Better quality products of proven design at reasonable cost leads to greater sales volume
  7. Project 3

    1. Reduction of manufacturing operations and risk of obsolescence due to fewer parts, varieties and changes in products
    2. It leads to quick delivery and better after-sale services.
    3. Improvement of product quality and reduction of prices
    4. The third project was about strategic planning. We did this project in a group. Strategic planning is the process of thinking through the current mission of the organization and the current environmental conditions facing it and predicting the future conditions of the business.

This project was aims at looking into the broader and detailed concept of operational planning. Managers should make sure that, their decisions are consistent with the overall organizational strategies to enhance success of the business.

In this project, we used three models of strategic planning; entrepreneurial, adaptive and the planning model, to study issues affecting. This project impacted in the organizations performance in a positive way. Although the impact was not such big, we still felt that, there was some minimal change; planning decisions were done more precisely and their implementation was followed up until the final end. This increased efficiency within the organization.

      Skills

I have a vast knowledge in global sourcing. In my recent past, I was working in a multinational corporation. I was representing the organization during decision making process. We decided to outsource our operations to a developing country where there was relatively lower cost of operations than our native country. The other country had cheaper labour, cheaper cost of raw materials and new technologies that were not available in our country. This strategy of outsourcing enabled the country to save a lot due to the lower cost of operations: This lead to higher profits for the organization.

On the line of procurement, I also got a chance to work in the procurement department. In this department, we used the concept of inventory control to manage our purchases and maintenance of our stock.

Under this concept, we used to do regular auditing of our inventory. This was aimed at eliminating losses associated with poor inventory management that could lead to stealing of inventory through access of unauthorized persons. In addition to this, we could also accurate forecasting of future demand. This ensured that, we had optimal level of stock at any time to avoid shortages.

Moreover, after purchasing a new inventory, we ensured that every item had its unique bar code. This technique of coding of inventory enabled the organization to manage its inventory, by easy identification of its location within the warehouse.

In conclusion, with all that experience, am confident that I can responsibly handle any job within this field without any problem.
