Internet safety was not something that I did not think was very important until a few months ago. When wireless internet connections first became available, I thought it was absurd that people would have private networks, and would not share their internet connections. At that time, I had a cheap internet router that barely provided service in my bedroom. I would try to search open networks that were nearby and connect to them, if possible. I would get upset when the connectivity was low or someone would kick me off of the network. The only thing that was important was that I was able to get on to the network.

The one major event that changed my way of thinking was having my identity stolen. I am not sure if it was a person like James, sitting outside of my house or someone visiting inside. When my identity was robbed, I did not know who to trust. When I notified my bank, they informed me that this is happening very often and it could very well be anyone. It was very violating to me, that someone would go and steal the hard earn money, I worked for to buy sneakers, games and perfume. My bank assisted me with setting up a secure account and advised me of several other precautions to take in order to protect my information.

There are many things you can do in order to prevent cyber dangers. Lesson 12B in Norton: Computing Fundamentals, Sixth Edition, outlines the steps. The easiest thing, I believe anyone with the internet can do is setting up passwords to the computer’s users, not sharing the data on the network and encrypting the wireless network. If you are out in public, guard your personal devices vigilantly. Make sure your data is backed up and there is a hard reset set up if a thief tries to unlock your device. Stay away of any suspicious emails, websites or download. As those may be used to gather information or send erroneous codes that wreak havoc. One major thing that will help avoid cyber threats is a good security system like Norton or Symantec. There is so much more, but at times is hard to avoid the other steps.

In conclusion, it is always good to have security measures in place. There may not be a way to avoid cyber threats totally, but there is a good chance you do not become a victim if you take precaution.
