Why is following the preferred course sequence important? What are the risks of taking courses out of sequence?

The preferred course sequence is important because it is like a path where you need to follow a step by step procedure in order to reach success. On a five or six-year academic plan, it would be difficult to catch up when you missed one of the courses in the sequence. There is always a prerequisite course to be able to move on to the higher course. It was designed that way to be able to understand the lessons or materials on the future classes. An example is taking an Algebra class prior to taking a Statistics class, for it would be hard to understand and solve equations without learning Algebra. You would need to pass a current course to move on to the higher course level. General education classes like English, basic Math, and Science classes always comes first before the core classes. Preparing for higher level courses is crucial in order to pass and graduate. Taking too many prerequisites upsets students most of the time, but they need to realize that it is an important part of their learning and success. If you take courses out of sequence, there might be a risk of getting behind from the classes that you need for your major. Your courses would not be organized and complicated if you take courses out of sequence, so it is better to follow the sequence and speak with your councilor or school advisor about your courses.
